Animal Profile

Jagger

Hello, my name is Jagger. My animal id is #245713. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/15/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- domestic violence.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Jagger is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Jagger arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing concerns. Upon intake Jagger was initially social with staff, allowed contact and was receptive to treats. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Jagger has become difficult to handle safely due to fearful-defensive behaviors. When attempting to leash, Jagger has been observed to retreat, growl, and snap towards hands of handlers. At times he as escalated to closing distance, lunging towards handlers when they attempt to leash him. Jagger's previous owner notes that in a home environment Jagger understands basic commands, is playful, and affectionate. Medically, Jagger is noted to have Allergies (undetermined), Otitis Externa, but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Date of assessment:: 1/18/2026

Summary:: During intake Jagger was obsvered to had a loose and wiggly body. However when approached in kennel Jagger becomes tense and begins snapping at the leash. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Jagger is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 1/21/26: Jagger greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. He disengages and reapproaches remaining neutral.

Summary (6):: 01/24/26: Handler approaches the kennel, Jagger is curled up in a ball in the back corner. He opens his eyes but does not lift his head. Handler tosses treats and Jagger vocalizes without opening his mouth (can see air moving his lips but cannot hear the sound over others barking). He remains completely still curled up on the ground and does not investigate the treats or handler, despite baby talk. Interaction ended. 01/23/26: A member of K9 behavior reported having difficulty leashing Jagger in the AM, a second member of K9 behavior arrives to assist with leashing Jagger. Jagger alert barks and does not accept treats from handler, handler makes multiple attempts to leash Jagger but he barks, vocalizes and snaps at the leash. Handler then implements the use of a pole leash to reach further into kennel as Jagger backs away from handler while leashing. Jagger at multiple points attempts to lunge forward toward handlers hand when leashing but eventually moves to the front of kennel lowering his head while panting and allows leashing. Handler differs the leash to the original K9 behavior member attempting to leash him and he is walked by them.

Summary (7):: 1/21/26: Jagger is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. As the handler attempts to leash him, Jagger dodges the leash and barks at the handler. After a few tries, the handler leashes and brings Jagger out the room. On the street, Jagger walks ahead with mild leash tension; he also shows no interest in passersby. As the handler calls Jagger, he is slightly attentive; the handler gives him a treat, but he spits out. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Jagger to the office. There, he presents a loose body, soliciting attention from other familiar handlers, and allowing pets from them and the primary handler. After a few minutes, the handler is able to return Jagger to his kennel with ease. 1/19/26: Jagger is at the front of his kennel with a slightly tense body. The handler gives him treat, Jagger shows no interest. He is leashed and brought out the room. While exiting the building, Jagger, with a soft body, sniffs staff members sitting down nearby. On the street, Jagger walks ahead with mild leash tension; he sops to relieve himself once and shows interest in passersby, but sniffing them as they walk past. Jagger doesn't display dog reactivity, but while entering the driveway, he slightly pulls towards a large dog that's present. While entering the building, Jagger pulls towards the same staff as earlier, and,with a wiggly body, jumps on them, soliciting and allowing pets. The handler pulls him off and walks him to his room. They clip their leash and return Jagger to his kennel with ease. 01/17/26: Jagger is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He accepts treats from handler who kneels down at the front and feeds Jagger. After a few treats handler begins slowly introducing a pole leash into kennel and Jagger backs away. Handler begins slowly bringing the leash up to Jagger who lip curls and begins snapping at the leash with a tense body. Jagger continues to alert bark and back away from handler as they continue attempting to leash Jagger. He bites the leash and jumps away for a while before he eventually concedes and approaches the front allowing handler to slowly pass the leash over his head. Once secured handler opens the door and Jagger walks out of kennel pulling moderately out to the yard. Once outside Jagger is tense and when passing people will stare hard at them with raised hackles. He is brought to the yard for his walk, outside he sees dogs and paws at the yard gates while staring at the dog, he is redirected by handler when called. He walks with handler for a while and explores the yards before being brought back inside. Handler carefully clips their leash and they return to kennel pulling moderately. 1/17/26: Staff reported that Jagger is growling and snapping at the leash when attempting to remove him from kennel

Date of intake:: 1/15/2026

Summary:: Loose and wiggly, allows pets, pulls on leash, muscled into kennel

Date of initial:: 1/17/2026

Summary:: Loose body, wagging tail, soliciting attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jagger so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking and growling towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Jagger has been obsvered to snap at the leash when handlers attempt to leash him in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Jagger, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
