Animal Profile

E.T

Hello, my name is E.T. My animal id is #225033. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/19/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

ET has also been observed to jump up, bite, and tug the leash into kennel. While exiting the kennel room ET has been observed to pull towards the other dogs while vocalizing. While on leash ET has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards other dogs. Medically ET has dermatitis.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: None Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Moderately social Call over: Approaches readily Sociability comments: Sniffing around the room, checks in with handler Soft handling: Accepts contact Exuberant handling: Accepts contact Comments: Neutral body Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler readily Knock Knock comments: Approaches readily Toy Toy comments: Grips firm, becomes tense when assess-a-hand approaches then snaps at the hand

Summary:: 4/30/25: ET greets another dog at the gate with a tense body, hackles raised and high tense tail.

Summary (5):: 05/17/25: E.T is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and intensely lunges at the door toward handlers hand before seeing the treats. E.T accepts the treat but will then begin howling and vocalizing loudly at handler until offered another treat. Handler begins using spray cheese to distract E.T which is effective, however when the leash is introduced to kennel E.T very quickly jumps up and mouths handlers hand. Handler quickly removes their hand from the kennel and uses the spray cheese again to attempt to redirect E.T. This time he remains fixated on the cheese and is successfully leashed. He exits kennel and follows closely next to handler, pulling moderately out to the street. Once outside he continues to pull forward, he passes people without issue and accepts tossed treats from handler while outside. He stops to use the bathroom while out and pants heavily when walking forward. After a bit he is brought back inside, he pulls hard when returned to kennel towards the other dogs he passes but is muscled into kennel quickly due to his intensity.

Summary (6):: 5/14/25: As handler approaches the kennel and removes the blocker, E.T begins to jump onto the bars with a tense body while vocalizing at the handler. As handler attempts to unlock the kennel door, E.T begins to snap at the lock as handler tries to place it on the bars. As handler presents the leash to E.T he would snap at the handlers hand, as the leash is pulled away E.T would attempt to pull the leash back into his kennel but is easily redirected with a treat. A treat lure is tried again and E.T would then snap at the handlers hand. A high value squeeze-up treat is used to distract E.T, which works with a fast approach. E.T is then leashed and removed from the kennel, once out he would slightly pull at the passing kennels and barking on the way out of the room. Once outside of the room, treats were tossed towards the elevator to help distract him and ease him. On the way to the driveway, he would moderately pull with a neutral body and would constantly do check in's with the handler. Once outside, he spotted a dog passing by and would vocalize intensely but was redirected with treats and a squeaker toy. Not too long after, he relieves himself and would remain soft bodied with the handler throughout the duration of his walk. He is then returned back to the shelter, clipped and went back to his kennel with no further issue. 5/10/25: E.T is barking and vocalizing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to jump while continuing to vocalize as the handler unlocks the door. The handler uses treats to distract him while attempting to leash him. He would eat the treats and then would instantly jump up and bite at the leash. He would continue to vocalize and jump up and catches the handler’s hand twice by his teeth hitting against their hand. While engaging with spray cheese, he is able to be leashed and he pulls hard on the way downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, he would prance ahead and explore around with a lot of sniffing. He would hard stare at dogs with a tense body as they passed by. He is able to be redirected with treats and would sit and stare at the handler for more. On the way back to his kennel, he begins to hard pull and tries to lung towards all the dogs in kennels he passed by. 5/4/25- ET is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He takes treats hard and handler tosses or gives with an open palm. He walks on a loose leash and allows handler to pet his head, neck and back. When his back is scratched, he sits. He has slight pull towards people when they are passing him with a neutral body. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 4/30/25: ET is lying down in kennel with a neutral body when handler approaches. He remains on his kuranda bed when handler unlocks the kennel door. Handler presents the leash and ET gets up and approaches with a soft body. He is easily leashed and walks slowly out of the room. He relieves himself and is brought to backyard. He approaches handler and leans in to them when handler crouches next to him and speaks to him softly. He walks around the pen aloof with the handlers. He does a dog-dog interaction and after is returned to his kennel without issue. 4/24/25: E.T is laying down at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and taken to the street for a walk. He relieves himself and walks along side handler for the whole walk. When pet, he heavily leans into handlers hands, and continues to solicit. He does not react to people passing by and maintains a soft body, but when spotting another dog, he pulls hard towards them and stares. He is easily redirected with treats and baby voice. ET is returned to his kennel without issue. 4/20/25: E.T is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He then begins to bark as the handler unlocks the door. He is able to be leashed with ease and taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would prance ahead with a loose body frame and had no reactions to dogs or people. He was comfortable receiving treats from the handler. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to kennel with no issue, and begins to bark at the door as the handler locks it and walks away.

Summary:: Loose body soft wagging tail, hard barking and lunging towards dogs, bark& growling towards people

Summary:: Loose body and wagging tail, allowed exam with minimal restraint

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on ET so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to snapping with toys in his possession we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: ET has been observed to become tense and then snap at the assess-a-hand when it approached. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of ET's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: ET has been observed to snap at the handlers hands when they attempting to leash him, he has made contact but no skin has been broken. It is important to move slowly with ET, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: During intake ET was observed to hard bark and lunge towards dogs while on leash, when people would pass through the lobby he would hard and growl towards them. During his stay in the care center ET has been observed to pull towards the dogs in the kennel room and vocalize while exiting. ET will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: ET has been observed to grab the leash and tug it into kennel when handlers are attempting to leash him. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
