Hello, my name is Baloo. My animal id is #247787. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- divorce/separation.

Upon intake Baloo allowed all handling and was easily leashed. He jumped on staff to solicit attention.

Basic Information:: Baloo is a 2.5 year old MMB dog. He is seeking a new home due to housing issues. Baloo has prior experience with adults, children, and other dogs.
Previously lived with:: 1 adult, 3 children (11, 13, 15), 1 small dog
How is this dog around strangers?: May bark or growl at first. Becomes friendly, outgoing, and playful.
How is this dog around children?: Friendly, outgoing, and playful.
How is this dog around other dogs?: May lunge or bite. May be friendly, outgoing, playful, and tolerant.

Bite history:: Baloo has bitten dogs twice. One in a dog park and one when the other dog surprised him in the hallway. Baloo has also redirected bites onto his prior owner twice. All incidents were bite and release with no blood drawn.

Other Notes:: Baloo is fearful of loud noises and being startled. He sometimes lunges at strangers or dogs. Baloo has no issue with being held/restrained, disturbed while sleeping, pushed off furniture, or having his collar or feet touched.

For a New Family to Know: Baloo is a social and affectionate dog! He always chooses to be where the people are, usually cuddled up with them on the couch quietly. When not being cozy, Baloo is very active and playful. He is used to one 30 minute walk per day and does not pull on the leash. He even knows the commands "slow" and "walk with me." Baloo has experience in crates but does not need to be in one. He has experience going to a groomer and loves going for car rides. Baloo is a smart guy and knows sit, down, off, stay, and okay. In his prior home, Baloo loved sleeping in bed with the 3 young children. According to his prior owner, he is the ultimate cuddlebug!

Summary (7):: 2/18/26: Baloo is sitting in the middle of his kennel. He whale eyes when the handler approaches. He rejects the first treat, but takes subsequent ones. The leash is draped over his head and he is lead to the street where he relieves himself. His body language becomes more neutral, with a horizontal tail and ears faced forwards. He is mildly hypervigilant. He sniffs around and walks ahead of the handler. He is returned to kennel without incident and gets in willingly.
