Charming
Hello, my name is Charming. My animal id is #198214. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/19/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.
Charming is at risk for behavior reasons. Charming is a young, high-energy dog. He has been leash-biting and difficult to remove from kennel. He is reactive to other dogs in kennel, and on-leash. Charming will pull his kennel blocker into his kennel and on one instance almost damaged the door. Medically, Charming recently displayed acute onset lameness on his right hind limb. X-rays were clear. A partial cruciate ligament tear is possible and, if present could progress to a complete tear. Charming would benefit from weight loss and a calmer environment.

Summary:: Friendly, high energy, allowed all handling
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to his high exuberance, mouthiness and lack of basic manners we recommend a home with no children. Single-pet home: Charming is reactive to other dogs. He will bark and lunge at the gate or on leash. He should be the only dog in the home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to reactivity seen in care and reported by previous owner, Charming should not visit the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Charming is reported to become tense and hover over items of a high value, including treats, and toys. Nothing should ever be taken directly from Charming. We recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Charming lacks basic manners. He is a young, strong, energetic dog who can jump up often during socialization sessions. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: While he applies only light pressure, Charming was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Charming puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Charming is reactive to other dogs when being walked on leash. He will bark and lunge. Charming may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity. Leash-biting: Charming has begun to bite the leash as staff attempt to secure it for walks. This is often a shelter specific behavior but can arise while on walks with his new owner as well. We recommend carrying treats and toys to distract him from this leash biting behavior. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low threshold for arousal: Charming become easily aroused during socialization sessions. He often needs time to slow down and settle. He is food motivated and can work on cues when in this aroused state however, he will need an experienced owner familiar with arousal as arousal can tip into aggression. Please see handout on Arousal.
