Animal Profile

Georgie

Hello, my name is Georgie. My animal id is #233747. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/28/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not house trained.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Georgie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In his previous home, Georgie was reported to display a variety of behavior concerns, including resource guarding of treats, toys, food, and other spaces (living room and couch) that resulted in a bite and holding onto one of his owner's hands, leaving punctures and drawing blood. Other behavior concerns include separation anxiety, destructive tendencies, touch sensitivity, and has escalated to higher-level warnings when strangers approach on walks and in the home. In care, Georgie has been accepting of treats but otherwise does not engage with handlers in his kennel. Medically, Georgie is cryptorchid and recommended he receive a full grooming with a dental cleaning.

In the prior home Georgie is noted to be vocal, very active and playful and likes to be where people are and in the living room. Georgie presents with multiple behavioral concerns that will require management and behavior modification support in placement. Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Georgie has been noted to house soil in the home, indicating a need for consistent potty training, scheduled outdoor breaks, and possible evaluation for stress-related or medical causes. Resource Guarding: In his previous home, Georgie displayed resource guarding behaviors around treats, food, and toys. He would growl, hard bark, snap, or attempt to bite—and has bitten in some instances. He also became territorial over specific areas like the living room and couch, reacting with barking and lunging when approached. These behaviors suggest a need for structured training focused on desensitization and impulse control around valued items and spaces. Destructive Behavior: Georgie has shown destructive tendencies in the home, which may be linked to anxiety, boredom, or lack of appropriate outlets. Providing enrichment, supervision, and redirection to suitable chew items will be important. Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control: Georgie is reported to jump up non-stop, indicating poor impulse control and a need for basic manners training to reinforce calm, appropriate greeting behavior. Anxiety / Separation Anxiety: Georgie experiences general anxiety and becomes distressed when left alone. He may benefit from gradual separation training, enrichment activities, and a predictable routine to help reduce anxiety. Fearful Behavior / Potential for Defensive Aggression / Handling Sensitivity: Georgie is fearful of loud noises and has shown destructive behavior when startled. He reacts with hard barking and growling when held or restrained and does not tolerate grooming, including bathing, brushing, or nail trims—often escalating to snapping. He also becomes nervous when getting into the car. These behaviors suggest a need for low-stress handling techniques and desensitization to grooming and restraint. On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration: Georgie has shown significant reactivity on walks and in the home, including growling, hard barking, baring teeth, lunging, and snapping when strangers approach. These behaviors indicate barrier frustration and fear-based reactivity, requiring structured behavior modification and controlled exposure to triggers. Low threshold for arousal/Bite history (human):Georgie's prior owner noted that last month their spouse was walking past the couch and began barking at them. The owner stated that their spouse told Georgie to relax and tried to pet him. Georgie bit the spouse hand and held on, owner stated they tried to pry Georgie off of the spouse hand and they weren't able to. The spouse broke the bite by lifting their hand in the air and when Georgie couldn't hold on any longer Georgie let go and fell down to the floor. The owner states their spouse sustained punctures but did not get medical attention.
