Animal Profile

Marine

Hello, my name is Marine. My animal id is #225070. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 5/23/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Marine is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Marine is apparently healthy.

A volunteer writes: When Marine didn't have a place to go, he tried to make himself small by cuddling himself up in the root of a tree. It's hard to miss this bright and fluffy dream cat, so someone waited with him, petting him for comfort until help arrived. Now that Marine has his own condo with us, he feels much more comfortable asking for those pets he loves so much. Dancing across the front of his condo and exuberantly throwing himself into every type of cuddle and snuggle you can imagine, Marine is only trying to be a friend. The very affectionate and attentive type. Softly kneading his blanket to himself whenever I wasn't paying attention to him, Marine patiently waited for his next chance. Marine's experiences have shown him that there's good everywhere, which is why he's now searching for it in the form of a forever home.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Marine was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/24/25 FB79 Such a cutie pie!!!!!!! Handsome man Marine is on the top shelter with his body relaxed/neutral face. He has soft eyes with forward ears when he lifts his head as i speak to him. Sweet boy allows all pets on his head and leans into cheek rubs while starting to purr. 5/28/25 FB58 Laying on his shelf and lifts his head with a neutral face and body to sniff my hand as I hold it up to the glass. When the cage door is opened, he sniffs the scratcher tool offered, and eats the treats placed in front of him as he accepts and leans into pets with the tool. He raises his hips and rolls onto his side and onto the tool. When the fake hand is then offered out to him, he has a slightly tense face and low body, accepting a few pets with his ears tilted before biting and releasing the hand. When I offer him squeeze up after, he hisses with a low body and backs away before he comes forward to eat later. 6/04/25 FB61 Handsome and fluffy guy. e is tolerant of all petting with the tool. He bites the fake hand. These behaviors appear to be more fear based or signs of confliction as opposed to overstimulation. 6/7/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Marine lays with a relaxed body and quickly jumps down with a high tail and starts to vocalize; he head bunts the assess-a-hand and leans into all pets on head, cheeks as well as down and around his back and body as he is back slightly ripples with a high tail. After a few more pets, when being pet on his cheek he slowly turns and nips the hand but remained tolerant and did not escalate any further. Marine then enjoyed treats that were placed down for him. 6/13/25 FB61 Standing on hind-legs in front of his kennel, body and face relaxed as he paws at the door softy to get my attention. I open the kennel door and he allows petting along his head and body with the assess-a-hand while leaning in, arching his back and gently swaying his raised tail. He turns his head energetically after being pet along the back to head-butt the hand and he does not show any signs of escalation, even when pet with more force. Wow - did great today! 6/16/25 FB79 At the front of his kennel, Marnie is pawing at the glass for attention and when his kennel door is opened he has a high tail with wide alert eyes and his ears forward; he showed slight interest in treats and when pet he tolerated a few pets on his head and cheeks before pulling away and trying to escape the kennel. 6/20/25 FB61 This is the second session of him allowing all petting with the assess-a-hand!! Tail waves around but he does not escalate today. What a happy and handsome fluff. 6/25 Vol. Marine was soliciting attention by running in place on his hind legs, hitting against the glass wall with his front paws. When it was time to interact with him, I opened the kennel door and he approached me right away. I gave him Squeeze Up, with he enjoyed. He allowed all petting, making biscuits as he laid on the bottom of the kennel.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Sweet,Affectionate,Demanding,People oriented,Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Previous Bite/Scratch incident occurred on 5/15/25: Adopter reported that the first two days Marine was kept in a large dog crate separated from resident cats. During this time, Marine would tolerate pets but would growl if it became too much so the adopter would stop petting. By the third day, Marine began to swat if the adopter attempted to pet. Adopter got a catio built for Marine in her basement. She put the crate against the door to let him walk in. In the next few days, Marine would let her walk in to clean the litterbox and feed him. On 5/13 , Marine scratched the adopter's foot when she went to provide food and water. This did not break skin. From then on, Marine would growl, hiss and swat at her. On 05.15.2025 at around 5 PM, the adopter needed to enter the catio that Marine was living in in order to feed him and clean the litterbox. Adopter opened the door and stepped in when Marine jumped on the adopter's leg while hissing and growling. Marine latched on her leg, leaving two puncture wounds and a few scratches and drawing blood. After latching on, Marine jumped off and ran into the corner. Adopter quickly exited the catio and closed the door behind her. The next day 05.16.2025, she went to see a doctor for the injury where she was given antibiotics. Adopter stopped going into the catio and instead gave him food/water through the door. When she would pass the catio, Marine would lunge to the other side at the adopter while yowling and swatting. Marine was transported in a trap to QACC. 4/22/25 Marine appreciates pets and attention and will lean his cheeks into hands for pets and roll on his side with a relaxed body during pets. He does remain fearful at times and at the end of our interaction, he did lightly swat and hiss at the assessor's hand to indicate he was done with pets along his back. He does not escalate and most likely is still somewhat fearful. 6/26/25 Upon re-eval, Marine comes to the front of his cage and solicits attention freely by pawing at the glass as he stands on his back legs. He accepts all pets along his head, cheeks and back, and allowed the assessor to lift him and place him back in the cage.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Marine would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, marine is laying on the shelf with a slightly tense face and body, ears forward, eyes wide. When the scratcher tool is offered out, he leans forward to sniff and leans into pets along his cheek with the tool as well as with the assessor's hand. When pet along his back, he raises his hips at time and will roll onto his side as he continues to lean into and appreciate head and cheek pets. Towards the end of the interaction, while the assessor is petting along his back, he pulls away and swats once at the assessor's hand and hisses as he communicates he's done with pets along his back - he does not escalate further. Pick up is not attempted at this time due to FAS. Upon re-eval, Marine is at the front of his cage and readily soliciting attention as he stands on his back legs and paws at the front of the cage with a soft face and body. He remains at the front of the cage when the assessor opens the door and sniffs their hand, accepting pets along his head, cheeks and back without issue, tail raised. He eats the treats offered and continues to appreciate all pets, laying down as he eats. He is coaxed to step out of the cage on his own and allows the assessor to pick him up and place him back in the cage without issue, accepting more pets after. Although Marine appears to have acclimated well to the shelter and interactions with shelter staff, showing Level 2 behaviors, he still requires an extended amount of time to fully adjust and has displayed serious offensive aggression in his previous adopter's home. Marine appreciates attention and petting and has acclimated well to the shelter over time. Due to the complexity and severity of his previous bite incident the behavior team is recommending that Marine be released through rescue.
