Summary:: According to Amaru's previous owner(s), Amaru is playful and friendly. Amaru lived with a small dog in his previous home. 9/10/26: Amaru is introduced to a familiar intact male and is loose at the fence with mid level wags. He paws at the opening of the fence and pushes his snout through. When face to face, Amaru engages in mutual sniffing, then disengages and walks across the yard. He is tolerant of the other dog sniffing him from behind but is aloof. The dogs are let off leash and independently explore, occasionally reapproaching and sniffing, but Amaru continues to walk away and not reciprocate prolonged interaction and the meet is ended. He is then introduced to a novel intact female and is neutral at the gate. The other dog is let into the yard and Amaru engages in mutual sniffing, then lowers his head when the other dog initiates start stop play. He is tolerant but retreats when she bumps him and leaps towards him. The two are given a break and Amaru engages with his handler, sitting for treats. Both dogs are let off leash and are mostly independent in the yard, remaining neutral. 9/3/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel spayed female and is loose at the fence toe tapping with mid level wags. He is let into the yard and engages in mutual sniffing with wide low wags, sniffing the other dog's genitals. The other dog spins and bounces towards him attempting to solicit play and Amaru flinches and lowers himself, lip licking and turning his head away. He reapproaches to continue sniffing and then flinches and retreats when the other dog leaps towards him playfully and the meet is ended. He is then introduced to a novel intact female and is loose while sniffing nose to nose through the gate, quickly disengaging and exploring the yard. The other dog is let in and Amaru sniffs her remaining loose, the other dog walks away and Amaru disengages on his own. The two reapproach and Amaru sniffs her ear, the other dog gives whale eye and has a tight closed mouth. He is pulled away and redirects his attention without issue. 9/2/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the gate with mid level wags. While waiting to be let into the yard, he paws at the fence and nudges it. He is let into the yard and engages in mutual sniffing remaining loose with mid level wags and an open panting mouth. The other dog begins to greet handlers and Amaru shakes off and the sniffs him from behind. Both dogs are let off leash and independently explore the yard, intermittently greeting each other and handlers remaining loose. Both dogs then direct their attention to separate handlers, sitting for treats.

Amaru lived with a small dog in his previous home. 8/27/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the gate with mid level wags. The other dog is let into the yard and Amaru engages in mutual sniffing, lowering himself under the other dog's head. He licks the other dog's genitals and is tolerant of the other dog doing the same. He muzzle licks the other dog and licks his ears. Both dogs are let off leash and Amaru periodically disengages, interacting with handlers and exploring the yard, and then will reapproach and continue sniffing, often holding his face close to the other dog's. 8/26/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the fence with mid level wags. He toe taps along the fence line, following the other dog. When face to face, he greets handlers and explores the yard, then engages in mutual sniffing. He is tolerant of the other dog doing chin overs but displacement toe taps while retreating, play bows, and then walks away. He independently explores the yard, tolerant of the other dog intermittently sniffing him. 8/25/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel neutered male and is loose at the fence with mid level wags, nudging his nose through the opening of the fence. When face to face, Amaru engages in mutual sniffing and follows the other dog when they walk away. He toe taps and spins while looking to the other dog and then jumps on handlers. The other dog reapproaches and continues mutual sniffing and they are let off leash. Amaru follows the other dog and reciprocates play bowing and bouncing before attempting to mount while beginning to cob and lick the other dog's back. While being pulled away, he continues attempting to mouth/grab the other dog's neck/back area. 8/22/26: Amaru is introduced to a novel intact female and looks towards the other dog at a distance but continues engaging with handlers. He is led over to the fence and greets the other dog with a loose body and mid level wags but quickly disengages and focuses on the handler. The other dog is let into the yard and they engage in mutual sniffing and then are let off leash. Amaru gives space when the other dog shows signs of discomfort, and continues to allow her to sniff him as he disengages and approaches handlers. Both dogs independently explore for several moments before reapproaching. The other dog sniffs him and he allows it but does not initially engage with her. She follows him in the yard and he sniffs her briefly but will continue to disengage frequently.

Summary (5):: 9/18/26; (MID) When the handler approaches his kennel to move him to a new kennel room, Amaru is seen jumping at the front of his kennel and tracks the handler hand. Amaru attempts to bite the lock when the handler clips it to the kennel bars. During leashing he begins to leash bite the handler tosses him treats which he sniffs but still jumps at the front of his kennel. The handler is able to lasso him when he is distracted and lead him out the kennel room. Amaru is kept on a short lead and he pulling his way down the hallway and stairs. Once in front of his kennel room he is reclipped and hops inside his new kennel. Amaru is seen pacing and jumping off his kennel walls as the handler walks away. 9/18/26: (AM) It was reported by ASC that, during Amaru’s morning walk, he began pulling excessively on the leash and jumping onto the handler while on the street so they brough him back to the driveway instead. While in the driveway, he jumped toward a passing staff member and grabbed their sweater sleeve. There was no contact or broken skin as handler was able to quickly remove their arm from the sleeve. Amaru still were pulling and tugging on the clothing material after. When first handler used an alternate item for redirection, Amaru turned back toward their hand and attempted to snap. Handlers eventually were able to manage bringing him back to the kennel. After returning, Amaru also attempted to jump and bite onto the lock when handler were securing the kennel door.

Summary (6):: 9/16/26: Amaru is jumping up and down at the front of the kennel, he is heavily panting and pushing off the kennel door intensely. Amaru is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He is brought to street and jumps up repeatedly infront of the handler. He then sits at their feet and is given a treat. On the street, he walks with a loose leash. Amaru stops to sniff spots and checks in with the handler occasionally, sitting at their feet for treats. He ignores a passing dog and continues walking back into the shelter. He is taken to the assessment office and greets the assessor with a soft body and jumps up on them exuberantly, he is redirected off with treats. After his assessment, Amaru is returned to kennel without issue 9/10/26: Amaru is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumping around; once he's still, the handler leashes him. As he's out the room, the handler clips their leash to Amaru's harness and walks him downstairs. Amaru is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). In between the interactions, Amaru approaches the handlers with a loose body and lays on his back to allow pets on his belly. After the interaction, the handler return Amaru to his kennel 9/3/26: Amaru is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumping around; once he's still, the handler leashes him. As he's out the room, the handler makes a few attempts to clip their leash to Amaru's harness as he exuberantly jumps around; another handler tosses treats, and as Amaru eats them, the handler clips the leash. Amaru is brought to the yard for playgroup (see notes). In between the interactions, Amaru approaches the other handlers with a loose body; he also sits on command and eats their treats. Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and returns Amaru to his kennel. 9/2/26: Amaru is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumping around; once he's still, the handler leashes him. As he's out the room, the handler makes a few attempts to clip their leash to Amaru's harness as he exuberantly jumps around; any time the handler touches him, Amaru wiggles his body. he handler walks Amaru downstairs and brings him to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). after the interaction, the handler brings Amaru inside and returns him to his kennel. 8/29/26: Amaru is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down, demand barking and pushing on the kennel door. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly out of the room. He chases after treats and is brought to the elevator. He rubs along the handlers legs and takes treats gently. Amaru is brought to the street where he relieves himself. He engages with the handler taking treats offered gently, he follows the command 'sit' He then walks with the handler back into the shelter and stops briefly outside of the kennel. He is coaxed inside with treats and the interaction

Summary (7):: 8/18/26: Amaru is reported to repeatedly jump on and off the handler walking him. 8/7/26: Amaru is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumping on the kennel door. He is easily leashed and brought out the room; even as there's not much leash tension, Amaru passes out. The handler clips their leash to their harness and continues the walk when Amaru stands up. On the street, Amaru walks with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to people or dogs. The handler begins to play the Up/Down pattern game; Amaru is mostly engaged with the handler, needing for them to call his to get his attention at times. After the game, the handler pets Amaru, which he leans into. Afterwards, the handler brings Amaru inside and returns him to his kennel. 7/31/36: Amaru greeted handler with a loose and wiggly body at front of kennel where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. Amaru walked slightly ahead of handler with light leash pressure. Handler engaged Amaru in a game of Up Down which he took to rather quickly, so handler added in the complication of walking while playing the game. Amaru did really well in his execution. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 7/26/26 (Assessment): Amaru is at front of kennel jumping and barking as handler approached. He is easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). While on walk he pulled moderately while walking slightly ahead of handler. He jumped on handler several times and tried a few times to stick his head into handler's treat pouch. He displayed no reactivity to people. He was social with handlers, but jumped around a lot during assessment. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/18/26: Amaru is at the front of his kennel with neutral body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of the room. Amaru pulls hard in the hallways and all the way outside. He pulls hard towards certain spots and eventually relieves himself. After he continues pulling hard in front of the handler. Amaru allows petting but remains aloof with handler. He doesn't react towards other dogs or people. His body is loose most of the time. After walk is finished, Amaru is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During returning handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Amaru back into the kennel with no further issues.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Amaru so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Because of this, we do not know how he is in a home environment. During his time in the care center he has been observed repeatedly jumping on handlers, jumping on and off during walks, and pulling heavily on leash. In one instance Amaru was pulling excessively on the leash and jumping onto the handler, he jumped towards a passing staff member and grabbed onto their sweater sleeve, he was pulling and tugging on the sweater; when attempting to use an alternate object to redirect him Amaru turned and attempted to snap at the first handler. Amaru is noted to be social with handlers and enjoys being pet.

Potential challenges comments:: Arousal/ Mouthiness: Amaru has been observed to mouth handlers with hard pressure during contact. He is also obserevd to jump up on handlers in a social manner. In one instance Amaru was pulling excessively on the leash and jumping onto the handler, he jumped towards a passing staff member and grabbed onto their sweater sleeve, he was pulling and tugging on the sweater; when attempting to use an alternate object to redirect him Amaru turned and attempted to snap at the first handler. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Amaru to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal and Mouthiness. Leash-biting: Amaru is noted to leash bite during leashing. Continued training should focus on creating positive associations with leash handling, reinforcing calm behavior during leashing, and redirecting him to appropriate alternative behaviors when arousal begins to increase. Please see the handout on leash biting. Kennel presence/Anxiety: Amaru is noted to pace and jump off his kennel walls. Providing consistent routines, enrichment opportunities, and strategies that encourage calm behavior may help reduce his stress levels and improve his ability to relax while housed in the care center. please see the handout on generalized anxiety.
