Summary:: 9/17/25: Malibu greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and barking while pulling towards the other dog.

Summary (7):: 9/24/25: Malibu is at the back of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She comes to the front and dodges the lasso leash once but is leashed easily on second attempt. She kennel fights as she is removed from the room and shakes off as she exits. On the street she is loose and soft bodied throughout, mildly-moderately pulling and occasionally checking in. She is returned to kennel without issue. 9/23/25- Malibu is at the front of the kennel with a wiggly body, she is easily leashed. When exiting the room she intensely cage fights on her hind legs. When out of the room she continues to cage fight with the pop ups, handler tosses treats which momentarily refocuses her. As handler waits for another to go into the elevator, handler has Malibu sit and continuously feeds her treats. When the other dog goes into the elevator she is taken for a street walk. She pulls hard exiting the building. Handler feeds her treats while walking on the street to keep her from pulling hard. She goes to grab various items on the street and picks up an ear plug. Handler tosses a treat, she drops the ear plug and goes to eat the treat. She allows handler to pet her head, neck and back. Malibu relieves herself and sniffs around a little. When returning into the building she pulls hard, she is easily clipped and again pulls toward a pop up crate and cage fights in the room. She readily goes straight into kennel without issue. 9/23/25- K9 behavior brought Malibu back to her kennel. When passing a pop up crate Malibu is pulling hard towards it and hard barking with a tense body. Handler has to keep her on short leash, pulling her away and she's on her hind legs. Once in the room Malibu pulls hard towards the passing kennels, intensely cage fighting. She pulls harder at the neighboring kennel harder and handler has to muscle her back into her kennel. She goes in without further issue. 9/21/25: Malibu has been observed to react to dogs at a high intensity. She is pulling towards dogs passing by in the yard and on the street while vocalizing. When spotting a dog across the street she will freeze and hard stare at the dog with a stiff body. Malibu will also pull into passing kennel rooms to react towards the dogs and pull towards passing pop up to kennel fight. Malibu is also reported to pull so hard she will pass out.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Malibu so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an experienced adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Malibu was observed to be heavily panting throughout her assessment. If Malibu displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During intake Malibu was observed to hard bark towards other dogs. During her stay in the care center Malibu has been observed to lunge towards dogs and people in and out of the care center. While in the kennel room Malibu will pull towards the other dogs while hard barking. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Malibu will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
