Summary:: According to King Bear's previous owner(s), King is friendly and outgoing with other dogs. 8/15/26: King Bear is introduced to a novel intact female and sniffs nose to nose through the fence while puffing his lips with a tense body and slow high wags before disengaging, shaking off and interacting with handlers. He briefly reapproaches but then walks away lip licking. 8/1/26: King Bear is introduced to a novel intact female and shakes off once in the yard and gives a couple high wags standing at a distance from the fence. He sniffs through the fence with an outstretched neck and then disengages and sniffs the catch pen. The other dog becomes reactive to him and he remains non reactive but has a flagged high tail and pushes his ears back. He is then introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a neutral body, curled downward tail, and sniffs nose to nose through the fence with soft eyes and an open panting mouth.

Summary (7):: 8/21/26: King Bear approaches the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. King walks with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to people or dogs. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns King Bear to his kennel. 8/06/26: King Bear is lying at the back of his kennel when the handler approaches. As the handler starts unlocking the kennel, he gets up, approaches the front, and allows leashing. He exits the kennel calmly and leaves the room with no issues. King Bear walks through the hallways at a slow pace, following the handler with minimal leash tension. He is taken to the play-yard, where he immediately relieving himself. After spending a short time in the yard, handler takes King Bear on street walk. Once outside, King Bear walks at a slow pace alongside the handler on the loose leash. He remains responsive, allows petting, follows verbal cues, and gently accepts treats. He remains a neutral body and a soft face. He shows no signs of reactivity toward dogs, people, or other environmental stimuli. Once walk is done, King Bear is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the reassessment (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and King Bear goes back to his kennel with no further issues. 8/05/26: King Bear is at the back of his kennel lying down on the kuranda bed when handler approaches. He gets up, does body shake and comes closer. He is easily leashed and taken out of the room. King Bear walks slowly in the hallways following the handler; he is taken to the yard. Once outside, he pulls harder towards the pen and relieves himself. King Bear is following the handler and is engaged. He follows cue "sit" and knows "wait". His body remains neutral with relaxed face. He gently takes offered treats. He doesn't react towards other dogs or people in neighboring pens. He allows petting and leans onto handler. He is not interested in pattern games or enrichment but is social with handler. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and King Bear goes back to his kennel by his own. 7/29/26: King Bear is lying down in the middle of the kennel. The kennel is unlocked and he stands up and approaches slowly. King is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel, he walks down the hall with pinned ears and lowered body. King walks to the street. He walks with a slack leash, sniffing his surroundings. King relieves himself a few times. He is walked back to the shelter and begins to retreat away from the shelter. When he cannot move away, he sits down. Handler walks him through a diff entrance and he follows slowly. King is brought to the assessment office, he seeks exit and begins to pull away from the handler. King avoids the collar and continues to seek exit. The interaction is then ended and he is walked back to kennel and is returned without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: King Bear is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for King Bear.

We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: King Bear's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that King Bear will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Handling Sensitivity: King Bear's previous owner states that he does not like when his paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach King to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: During his assessment, King was observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have pinned ears, and a tense low body. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. King would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
