Due to the owner's report of not liking certain handling, coordinator kept handling to a minimum. Gizmo followed coordinator around and sat close. He greeted workers that approached with a wiggly and loose body.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the discomfort Gizmo has displayed with some forms of handling, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Gizmo's overall handling sensitivity combined with his multiple bite history, we believe he may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. Force-free, reward based training only is highly advised.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Gizmo has lifted his lip and bared teeth when his paw was handled, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Gizmo's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Gizmo to be more comfortable with this. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Gizmo is described as shy with new people and has snapped when fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Gizmo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Gizmo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Gizmo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Gizmo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression: Gizmo has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Gizmo needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Gizmo as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
