Marshmello is at risk due to behavior concerns. He was reported to be a active, hyper, and playful dog by his previous owner. During his stay, he has remained social with handlers but has been noted to have a low threshold for arousal. Marshmello will usually mount and is unable to be redirected. In a recent incident, Marshmello escalated to biting a handlers leg when they attempted to remove him from their leg while he was mounting. He bit and held their pants until the handler exclaimed verbally. Medically, he has brachycephalic syndrome and CIRDC.

Marshmello held onto the handlers pant until the handler exclaimed verbally. Marshmallo then released their pants. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I am playful and cute! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Temporary] Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with CIRDC and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

Summary (7):: 9/16/25: Marshmello is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body looking towards the handler. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately out towards the street. Handler clipped their leash to his harness with ease. He stops to sniff spots on the ground before walking with the handler with a loose leash. He relieves himself a few times and continues walking aloof with the handler. Handlers toss treats after he relieves himself and he will go to eat them. He follows the command 'sit' and is given treats when he does so. Marshmello is then walked back to the shelter and is re-leashed. He is returned to kennel without issue. 9/14/25: ACS report that Marshmello began to mount them in the yard. When the handler attempted to pull him off their leg Marshmello bit their leg, only catching their pants. Marshmello held onto the handlers pant until the handler exclaimed verbally. Marshmello then released their pants and was returned to kennel with no further issue. 9/8/25: Staff reported that Marshmello mounts handlers. 9/8/25- Marshmello is laying down with a soft body when handler approaches, he comes to the front and is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash, slowly sniffing everything intensely. When he sees another dog he becomes tense and hard stares, he lip licks a few times. Handler tried to have him disengage but he starts to hard pull towards the other dog. Handler has to tug him away in the other direction. Once the dog is gone Marshmello goes back to sniffing. He slowly follows the handler across the street and he is tossed treats. He doesn't walk far and stays to sniffing around. He is taken for his assessment where he is easily collared and is social with handlers. He allows handlers to put a harness on him. When second handler went to adjust the underbelly part of the harness Marshmello head flips towards them. He jumps on the couch and sniffs around. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary:: Jumping up on handler
Date of initial:: 9/8/2025
Summary:: Tense body for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: Marshmello is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Marshmello.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Marshmello's previous owner states that he will urinate in the home a few times a week. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Marshmello was observed to become tense and hover over a toy that was in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Marshmello's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Marshmello's previous owner states that he will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Marshmello's previous owner states that he will become fearful when his paws are touched and when his collar is grabbed. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Marshmello to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Marshmello's previous owner states that he is fearful when startled and when pushed off furniture. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Marshmello would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Marshmello's previous owner states that he will lunge towards strangers that approach. During his stay he was observed to fixated on other dogs and pull towards them with a tense body. Marshmello will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: Marshemello have been obsvered to become over aroused and mount handlers. During one instance when the handler attempted to him off their leg Marshmello bit their leg, only catching their pants. Marshmello held onto the handlers pant until the handler exclaimed verbally. Marshmello then released their pants. Marshemello should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Marshmello. Please see handout on Arousal.
