Adam
Hello, my name is Adam. My animal id is #242378. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - debilitating injuries.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAdam is at risk for behavior reasons. Adam was initially highly fearful, constantly seeking exit and avoiding touch. He has begun to warm up but it has taken time and a slow, considerate approach. Although Adam is showing improvement, he is too fearful to conduct a successful adoption interaction. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Adam is a 2-year-old male Husky who was recently surrendered to the care center and is currently struggling to adjust to the new environment. He is highly fearful and allows only minimal handling at this time, so he will need a patient adopter who can provide a slow, supportive decompression period to help him feel safe. According to his previous owner, Adam is a social and affectionate dog once comfortable, and he enjoys water, bath time, and car rides, treats & toys! With patience, consistency, and a calm home, Adam has the potential to show his true, loving personality and become a wonderful companion.

The kennel door was opened once all four paws were on the floor and he was easily leashed. Adam was then taken outside by a staff member, where he was met by another dog with whom he had previously lived with. Adam pulls towards the other dog with a high "C" shaped tail, becoming bouncy. Both dogs began to sniff each other's noses when staff members heard Adam's teeth snap at the other dog. Adam was quickly moved away to reset, and both animals were walked down the block together afterwards. The session was ended and Adam was brought back to his kennel without any issues. 12/20 Adam is standing at the front of his kennel when staff approaches. She invites him over, patting her leg, and he sniffs up her arm. He tolerates some pets on his chest and then looks away, so the pets stop. He allows himself to be clipped without issue. When returning, a dog reacts in their kennel, Adam spins and throws himself on the ground. They rush back to his kennel. 12/7: Adam is easily leashed and remains near the handler as they walk out of the room. Adam is brought to the yard with two staff members. The handler attempts to collar him as he is relieving himself. He stops and runs to the end of the leash, avoiding her. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a high level of fear, we recommend an adult only home. No cats: Adam lived with another cat and is reported to lunge. Place with a New Hope partner: Adam is highly fearful in care and only allowing minimal handling. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Adam has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, when attempting to collar him, he retreats backs away avoids handler. It is important to always go slow and give Adam the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Adam’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Adam may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see the handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Adam is showing signs of fear in the care center. Some fear is expected in this stressful environment. However, it is taking him very long to warm up with staff. He is tolerant of some handling but is often anxiously seeking exit during socialization. He does well with a slow, considerate approach. Please see the handout on Fearful. Anxiety: Adam is reported to be anxious in his previous home, pacing, whining. We are seeing this behavior at the care center as well. If Adam displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety.
