Summary:: Chester FKA Goob arrived at the care centers as a stray, so his history with other dogs is unknown. 8/29/26: Chester is introduced to a novel intact male and is loose at the fence with fast nub wags. When face to face, Chester sniffed nose to nose remaining loose but when the other dog attempted to circle and sniff, Chester began frantically moving his butt away and head whipping, then began guttural growling with hackles raised and hard barked. Once separated, Chester redirected without issue. 7/11/26: Chester is introduced to a novel intact female and gives an initial huff before disengaging and jumping on handlers. He does not reapproach the fence and continues to solicit attention from handlers before lying on the grass nearby the fence. The other dog is let into the yard and he briefly sniffs them with raised hackles. When face to face he paused, gave whale eye, lip licked, and retreated to handlers. 6/13/26: Chester greets a novel female dog off leash through a barrier. Chester will greet the female dog with a tense body, stretching to sniff the female dog but will flinch and back away. The female dog is loose/wiggly and a bit exuberant, whining and trying to solicit attention at the gate. Chester will continue to reapproach but is conflicted each time.

Summary (2):: 8/29/26: Chester is at the front of the kennel with a loose body. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel room. Chester jumps up on the handler exuberantly. Pawing at them repeatedly. He is brought to the driveway and continues to jump up on the handler before he sits at the handler's feet looking towards them. He is given a treat and is taken out towards the street. On the street, Chester pulls moderately ahead of the handler he stops to sniff various spots. He will sit at the handler's feet for treats. A dog passes and Chester remains sitting at the handler's feet looking towards the handler. He takes brief glances towards the dog but remains seated. He is taken back to the shelter and walks with a loose leash. Chester is then taken back inside and is returned to kennel without issue. Once the leash is removed, Chester jumps up on his hind legs and begins to spin around. The interaction in kennel.

Summary (3):: 8/29/26 (D2D):Chester is at front of kennel where he is easily leashed and taken to the backyard for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). After playgroup handler was bringing Chester back to kennel and he jumped up numerous times. He was returned to kennel. 8/29/26: Chester is at the front of his kennel, panting and pacing back and forth when the handler approaches. He accepts offered treat and is easily leashed and taken out of the room. Chester shows no interest in the neighboring dogs, pop-up crates or staff members in the hallways; he continues pulling hard toward the exit making himself cough. Once in the driveway, he immediately relieves himself. He attempts to jump high almost in handler's face and had to be straight armed. Handler is able to cue him to sit which helps him settle. Once he gets to the street he slows his pace and continues walking slightly ahead of the hander with moderate leash tension. Chester is not interested in other dogs or passing by people. He responsive when called and is receptive to treats. His body is slightly tense and lowered and he displays wide eye. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Chester back into his kennel with no further issues. 8/27/26 (late entry): Chester is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumpin up on the kennel door; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Chester walks with mild to moderate leash tension, with no reactivity. He frequently jumps towards the novel handler walking with the experienced on. Eventually, Chester eases the leash tension, but heavily pants. The handlers walk Chester to the yard. There, he continues to repeatedly jump towards the novel handler; he also chases pigeons and sparrows that land nearby. Chester then approaches a cot and paws it, causing it to land on the ground; he paws it once more and barks at it. As the handler pulls Chester away, he remains fixated until there's enough distance. Chester then jumps up repeatedly on the handler and mouths their forearms and hands. When they walk him to another pen, Chester jumps on the handler and holds onto them as they pet his head, back, and belly. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Chester to kennel.

Summary (4):: 8/25/26: Chester is at the front of his kennel, exuberantly jumping around as the handler approaches; he is leashed and brought out the room. He jumps up to the handler, but stops as the leash is already shortened. Chester walks with mild to moderate leash tension. As the handler bends down to clean after Chester, he hits their face with his paw; as they stand up right, he attempts to jump up to them, but they straight arm the leash. While walking back to the shelter, Chester walks with mild to no leash tension, but consistently heavy pants. The handler brings Chester to the office; he exuberantly approaches the other handlers, as well as attempts to climb on the couch. With and without command, Chester lies down, but continues to heavily pant. When it is time to return to his kennel, Chester baulks in place; another handler speaks to him in a baby voice and drops treats in front of him, which helps coax him. The handler walks Chester to his kennel, and as he enters, they remove his leash. 8/23/26: Chester is at the front of his kennel when the handler approaches. He sniffs the offered treat but ignores it. He allows handler to leash him and willingly exits the kennel. Chester shows no interest in the neighboring dogs and remains focused on moving forward out of the room, maintaining strong leash tension. Once in the hallways, Chester continues pulling toward the exit; he does not react toward pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside, he slows his pace and begins investigating his surrounding. He becomes more receptive to handler, follows verbal cues and accepts treats. When walk resumes, Chester returns to pulling strongly ahead of the handler with significant leash tension. His body is visibly tense and eyes are wide. Chester is not interested in other dogs or passing by people. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Chester back into his kennel with no further issues. 8/22/26: Chester is standing quietly at the front of the kennel. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel room. Chester turns to the handler and begins to jump and down on them in an exuberant manner repeatedly. He is directed down with treats before returning to jumping up towards the handler. He is nudging the handlers arms as he continues to jump up and down repeatedly. Chester is redirected with treats as he pulls ahead of the handler. When he turns to jump, handler tells him sit and he responds. He takes treats gently. Chester relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. He is returned to kennel and when he enters the kennel and the leash is removed, Chester jumps up on his hind legs and spins around barking repeatedly. The interaction is then ended.

Summary (5):: 8/21/26: Chester is at door of kennel jumping with paws on door and vocalizing. Once handler leashes him he is pulled from kennel. Coming out of kennel he starts jumping up at handler and mouths their forearms. He does this numerous times during his walk. He is returned to kennel. 8/20/26: Chester is at the front of his kennel pacing back and forth with heavy panting when the handler approaches. He is not receptive to offered treats but handler still is able to put the leash on. While walking out of the room, Chester immediately pulls hard toward the exit and maintains significant leash tension. He shows no interest toward neighboring dogs. Once in the hallways, Chester continues pulling strongly toward the exit and does not react to pop-up crates or staff members. Once in the driveway, he immediately relieves himself. He continues walking with hard leash tension, keeping his body low and shifting his weight forward. Handler is able to briefly slow him down using treats and a cue "sit". Chester follows the cue and is able to stop, patiently waiting for handler to toss more treats. He is heavy panting and salivating, his eyes are wide, and his body displays visible muscle tension from pulling. When handler stops tossing treats, Chester repeatedly attempts to jump directly toward the handler's upper body and face (his mouth remains closed). Handler is able to straight arm him to maintain distance and redirect him forward. Chester shows no reactivity toward passing dogs or people and does not attempt to jump toward them. Once walk is done Chester is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Chester back into his kennel with no further issues. 8/09/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of his kennel with a loose body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed with a treat lure and pulls hard while exiting the room. He continues pulling forward through the hallways but does not display reactivity toward dogs in pop-up crates. He is actively panting due to pulling, and his pupils are dilated. Once outside, Goob continues pulling hard forward. When the handler calls him he turns back and jumps onto the handler. He is redirectable with treats, allowing handler refocus his attention and resume the walk. Goob pulls hard while crossing the street and immediately relieves himself. He continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with moderate leash tension. He does not react toward passing dogs or people. Goob remains engaged with the handler, follows the verbal cue “sit,” accepts treats, and allows petting. His body remains loose and wiggly throughout the walk. During return the shelter, the handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Goob back into his kennel without further issues.

Summary (6):: 8/02/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed with a treat lure and pulls hard while exiting the room. He continues pulling forward in the hallways with no reactivity towards pop-up crates. Once in the elevator, Goob attempts repeatedly jump up onto the handler, placing both front paws on their treat pouch. He is panting a lot due to pulling and his pupils are dilated. Once outside, he continues pulling hard forward and when handler calls him and cues to sit, Goob ignores the command, and jumps onto them again. He is redirectable with treats and handler is able to resume the walk. Goob pulls hard crossing the street and immediately relieves himself. He continues walking slightly ahead of the hander with moderate leash tension. He doesn't react towards other dogs or people passerby. He is engaged with handler, follows command "sit", accepts treats and allows petting. His body remains loose and wiggly during the walk. Upon return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and brin 7/26/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and pulls very hard out if the kennel and downstairs. On the elevator, Goob begins to jumps up and paws at the handler exuberantly in an anxious manner. His eyes dilated and panting heavily but is able to be redirected with treats. He will continue to jump up at the handler before stopping and sitting at the handler's feet. He is given treats which he takes gently. Goob is brought to the street where he pulls hard. He begins to gasp as he walks on the street. Handler puts Goob in a leash harness. He begins to squirm and dodge the handler. Treats are scattered and he is able to be harness without issue. Goob walks with mild pulling on the harness, he relieves himself a few times. Handler practices clicker training with him. Clicking before a treat is given. He begins to pick up on it slowly. Goob is walked back to the shelter. He stares at dogs with raised head, neutral face, and perked ears. He pulls hard back into the shelter and taken back upstairs. He sits for the handler in the elevator as they go back up. He is then returned without issue. 7/18/26: Chester FKA Goob is sitting at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately out of the kennel. He is taken to the elevator where he jumps up exuberantly onto the handler pawing them. Goob will eventually drop down and sits at the handlers feet. He is given treats for this which he takes firmly. Goob repeats this behavior several times. He responds to "down" and "sit". Goob is taken out to the street he begins to pull hard where he can be heard gasping. Handler tosses treats and puts him in a leash harness without issue. In the harness, Goob walks with mild pulling. He relieves self and stops to sniff various spots on the ground. Goob is then walked back to the shelter where he is returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 7/11/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken downstairs. On the elevator, he begins to jump up on the handler exuberantly pawing at their shirt. Handler is able to direct Goob down with treats and have him sit. He will repeatedly jump on the handler but follows the command. Goob is then brought towards the backyard. He is placed on a drag leash and runs around the yard. He jumps up on handlers exuberantly. Handlers use squeakers and treats to redirect him but they are not as successful and he has to be pulled off the handlers. Goob does an interaction with another dog (see dog-dog interaction). After he then pulls hard back inside the shelter. Goob is taken back upstairs and is returned to his kennel without issue. 7/7/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of the kennel with a loose body, he is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He is brought downstairs in the elevator where he begins to jump repeatedly up at the handler, he paws at their PPE. Handler is able to redirect with him treats. Goob repeats the behavior outside and is able to be redirected down with treats, putting all 4 paws on the ground. He pulls hard to where he begins to hack and choke. Handler is able to put Goob in a leash harness. He squirms slightly as it is done but is able to be harnessed successfully. Goob walks with a loose leash to mild pulling in the leash harness. He pulls towards passing people in a social manner. Goob is then taken back to the shelter and towards the assessment office. He greets the assessor exuberantly. Goob avoids being collared at first but is able to be collared with treats. After his assessment, he is returned to kennel without issue. 7/6/26: Chester FKA It is reported via the whiteboard Goob will flee and may need belly band to return 7/5/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel. He is taken towards the elevator. Inside he begins to jump up on the handler exuberantly, pawing towards them in a frantic manner. Goob is directed down with treats. He is brought to the street and begins to pull hard where he begins to hack and cough. Handler is able to put Goob in a leash harness. His pulling reduces. Goob relieves himself a few times and is walked back to the shelter. He is then returned to kennel without issue. 6/27/26: Chester FKA Goob is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. While exiting the building, Goob pulls hard; after relieving himself, he walks with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to any passersby. As the handler cleans up after Goob, he jumps on them with a soft body and allows pets. This is repeated a few more times. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Goob to his kennel. **Older EN available upon request.**

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chester so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to his low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the displays of behavior indicating that Chester is uncomfortable around other dogs – growling and barking when in close proximity - the Behavior Department recommends that he not be taken to dog parks. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to counter-condition and desensitize Chester to help him associate other dogs with positive experiences, such as toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Chester FKA Goob has been observed to jump up on handlers persistently. During his current stay, this behavior has increase significantly. This behavior is difficult to redirect. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: During intake Chester was observed to thrash on leash. During his assessment Chester was observed to retreat from handlers and thrash mildly when they attempted to place a collar on him. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Chester would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Arousal: During his previous intake intake, Chester was observed to chew on cones. This behavior has continued to be observed while in care. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Chester to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors.
