Mumba
Hello, my name is Mumba. My animal id is #220813. I am a desexed male orange cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Mumba is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Mumba tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Mumba loves treats enough to come out and explore his condo for them. He loves more things, and we're sure of it, we just haven't learned what those things are yet. Now, that might not sound like much to go by but settling into Care Center life hasn't been the easiest for dear Mumba and so we're celebrating our wins when we see them. Preferring his den and condo shelf to joining the mix at the front, Mumba is curious but not enough to put himself out there. As is often the case, there's more to the story. Mumba was brought to us when his person passed away and though he tolerates petting from us, he's not really one to put himself out there. Mumba was brought to us from a home with other cats and is hopeful for a second chance with you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/10/25 FB58 In den and hidden from view - I offer squeeze up and chicken in a tray but he remains tense and frozen in the den. When I lean away, he moves out of the den quickly with eyes wide and dilated and sits up on the shelf with a tense body. He is tolerant of touch but remains tense and frozen. 4/16/25 FB61 In cat den, body and face tense and pupils dilated. He tolerates petting along his head and back while remaining very still, then suddenly turning and attempting to flee. He does not show interest in the treats or catnip toy offered at this time. Very shy and skittish - needs more time. 4/23/25 FB61 In his cat den - he remains completely hidden no matter what toys or treats I put in there. However - and this happened all day - whenever I enter the room after being gone I see that he’s out of his den exploring or eating his dry food. The treats are always gone as well. He may be scared but he is responding to enrichment and treats so there is some potential! 5/2/25 FB79 Today, Mumba displayed the same exact behaviors from the previous enrichment note. 5/4/25 Vol. Mumba was inside his den. I lifted the cover and saw him at the very back of it. He gave a loud hiss when he saw me. I put Squeeze Up near the opening of the den but he did not eat it. I spoke softly to him and put a pipe cleaner near him, so see if he was accept being petted with it. He grumbled so I did not touch him. When I started to replace the den cover, he moved towards the den opening as if to run out. He did this several times until I was able to put the den cover down and give him his privacy. 5/14/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with tail wrapped around body. He does not come out for treats or a catnip toy this time around. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when the room is quiet. Nervous boy, big cheeks. 5/21/25 FB61 He's out of his den today, and he looks cleaner than previously. He freezes when he notices me, then he retreats quickly into his den with a low body and tail. When I check on him later I see the treats have been eaten... hopefully he plays with the toy offered later as well. Showing pretty consistent behaviors at this time. May need placement at this time... not adjusting to the shelter environment too well.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Mumba would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 04/08/25 Mumba was crouched in his den as the assessor approached, body and face tense and ears tilted. Mumba avoided eye contact when spoken to and he remained frozen in place as the kennel door opened. Mumba tolerated petting along his head and body with the scratcher tool while shifting his weight and squinting his eyes, tail wrapped tightly around his body. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 05/08/25 Upon re-eval, Mumba is in his den and completely hidden from view. He cannot be coaxed out of his den with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is slowly lifted he hisses and lunges at the front of the den. When the scratcher tool is slowly introduced into the den, he again hisses hard and while somewhat tolerant of touch with the tool, turns to watch the tool at times while continuing to hiss and growl. Pick up is not attempted. Mumba tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
