Hello, my name is Barker T. My animal id is #243077. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/6/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBarker T is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Barker T has demonstrated high arousal and difficulty regulating his behavior during handling assessment attempts, including pulling hard on leash, repeatedly jumping onto handlers, jumping toward shoulder and face level. He has shown a flushed face, heavy panting, and difficult refocusing while aroused, resulting in multiple handling assessments being discontinued. Medically, Barker T is apparently healthy.

Barker T is a highly energetic, food-motivated dog who is easily leashed and responsive to basic cues such as sit and stepping onto platforms when reinforced with treats. He enjoys enrichment like snuffle mats and spray cheese and is able to engage appropriately when structured activities are provided. Barker T struggles with a low threshold for arousal and becomes easily overstimulated, leading to jumping, mounting behavior, and difficulty settling, especially in novel or highly stimulating environments. Behavior Condition: 1. Green
The dog was transported to the shelter in a crate but was easily taken out and placed in a kennel in canine recovery. The dog seems to have a good temperament.
Date of intake:: 12/6/2025
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Limited History)
Date of assessment:: 12/9/2025
Summary:: 12/09/25: Barker T is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment,Once in the office he will pull hard and jump onto the handler with a flushed face and jump toward shoulder level for the leash. Treats are tossed and he is called over which he ignores and continues to jump. Due to this, he is taken back to his kennel, and a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. 12/7: Barker T enters the room with a red, flushed face and is panting heavily. Handlers offer him treats, which he does not take, but he will lick spray cheese. As he is eating the spray cheese, a drag leash is clipped to his collar. Barker then explores the room, but when handlers attempt to begin the assessment, he jumps up on the assessor, mouth open, and positions himself as if to mount, a few times, but does not follow through as the assessor stands and attempts to reset. But Barker T continues jumping up now with a closed mouth towards the side of the assessor's face. Due to his behavior, he was returned to his kennel, and a handling assessment was not conducted to give him more time to acclimate.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 12/07/25 Barker T is introduced at the gate to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Barker T will approach the gate after exploring the pen intensely, standing tall with a fast-wagging tail. Barker T appears sexually motivated as he whines at the female dog soliciting attention as well as marking and spreading his scent. Due to him making the female dog uncomfortable, the gate isn't opened and Barker T is returned to kennel
Summary (6):: 12/23/24: Barker T is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, is easily leashed and walked outside for a walk in the pen. When dogs pass, he will whine, kick his feet back and run to the front of the gate and continue to whine. When called over, Barker will tail wag, but is aloof for most of the interaction and does not come when called over or coaxed. Barker T is returned to kennel with no issue. 12/16/25: Barker T is standing at the front of his kennel, jumping up on his hind legs but allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to the play yard for enrichment. Once inside, Barker T maintains a soft, loose, wiggly frame while running around the yard, exploring and relieving himself. While in the yard, he notices another dog in a nearby yard and begins whining. When the session is complete, Barker T is returned to his kennel safely without any issues.
Summary (7):: 12/14/245 Barker T is sitting firmly as the handler approaches. He allows leasing stepping forward into the loop of the leash and they proceed to the behavior office. There waiting is a snuffle matt as well as a paper bowl filled with spray cheese. Barker T Is kept on leash as he engages with these items. Outside of the snuffle matt and paper bowl, Barker T explores the room, sniffing intensely and marking in different places around the room. Barker T will take treats gently when administered, being rewarded for certain cues like "sit" and "up" having Barker climb onto a flat surface. Barker T is returned to kennel with no issue. 12/09/25 (Assessment): Barker T is sitting on his kuranda bed, wagging his tail rapidly and shifting his weight forward as the handler approaches his kennel. As they open the door, Barker T will begin to whine and jump onto the door. He is leashed with ease and walked into the behavior office where he will pull hard and jump onto the handler with a flushed face. He is returned to his kennel and secured safely. (See Assessment for more details) 12/07/25(Assessment): Barker T is standing at the front of kennel with a flushed face as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walked to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (due to his behavior, an assessment is not completed at this time). Barker T displays a flushed face and heavy pant as he enters the room. He shows no interest in treats but engages with spray cheese on the couch as handlers collar him. As assessor is positioning Barker T for the touch portion of assessment, he jumps up onto the assessor with an open mouth and positions as if to mount. He is refocused with a squeaker but repeats the behavior a few times. Assessor resets and Barker T jumps up onto assessor again so handler grabs the lead and guides him away. Barker T is returned to kennel safely. 12/07/25 (PG): Barker T is standing on his kuranda bed with a slightly stiff frame and his tail high as the handler approaches the kennel. He will come forward as they begin to open the door and will vocalize but is leashed with ease. He will pull moderately to the play yard and will mark most of the time he is in the yard. (See Dog-Dog for more information) Barker T is returned to his kennel at the end of the session and secured safely. (2): During playgroup, while waiting for the other dogs to arrive, Barker T would charge, jump up, and attempt to catch birds/pigeons that landed in the pens, including ones that would fly by.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Leash-biting/Low threshold for arousal:Barker T noted to show arousal behavior and becomes easily overstimulated, leading tTraining should focus on impulse-control exercises such as “sit,” “wait,” and “leave it,” paired with high-value rewards for calm behavior. Incorporate structured decompression walks in low-arousal areas, redirect mouthiness to appropriate chew items, and use short, frequent sessions to prevent escalation. Reinforce calm engagement and gradually increase exposure to novel environments as Barker demonstrates improved self-regulation.o jumping, mounting behavior, and difficulty settling, especially in novel or highly stimulating environments. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Leash-biting/Low threshold for arousal.
