It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 12/18/24: Admire was lying on kuranda bed and began barking with wide eyes as handlers approached. Handler tossed treats onto bedding and Admire immediately got up to eat them. She came to front of kennel when treats were scattered by the door and was leashed with ease. Admire walked on a loose leash to the BA room for her assessment. She was extremely food motivated and tolerated handling while being collared despite her ear wound. She took treats very roughly. Admire had difficulty standing up for long periods of time and would frequently shift her weight from side to side or appear as if she was slowly dropping into a sit. Admire eventually sat at handler's feet with her hip rolled and accepted pets along her back. She was returned to kennel with ease.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5)- Due to Admire fearfulness and poor bite inhibition we recommend she is placed ina home without young children.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- During the assessment treats are tossed due to her taking treats roughly. Teaching her to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Fearful- To help Admire overcome herfearfulness, use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement. Identify the specific triggers that cause her fear and introduce them at a low intensity while pairing them with high-value treats. Gradually increase the intensity of the trigger while ensuring Admire remains comfortable. This process will help her build positive associations with previously fearful stimuli. Always allow Admire to approach new situations at her own pace, and never force herinto uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce her fearfulness and build her confidence. Please see the handout on decompression period. Kennel presence- whale eyes growling in kennel
