Animal Profile

Nym

Hello, my name is Nym. My animal id is #259419. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/10/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Nym is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Nym was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. The cat was found in a building stairway and resisted capture by hissing and swatting. During attempts to guide it into a carrier, an officer sustained a minor puncture wound to the finger. After officers flicked water against the wall, the cat ran into the open carrier and was safely contained.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/17/26 FB09 Nym was sitting in her litter box with dilated eyes and forward ears. She began low growling as the handler approached but then slowly came forward to sniff the treats offered to her. She eagerly licked them up while avoiding all contact with the handler. 7/19/26 FB09 Nym was sitting in her litter box and hissing at the handler upon approach. She approached to eagerly lick up the treats offered to her but once finished she lunged at the kennel door and hissed at the handler again. The interaction ended to reduce FAS. 7/27/26 FB73 Nym is laying on top of her den, hissing and quickly comes forward to swat at the handler from outside of the kennel door as they approach. Handler attempts clicker training and loads the clicker by click + treat roughly 10 times before attempting targeting with the back of the scratcher tool. Nym catches on quickly, booping her nose to the tool as the handler follows up with a click + treat. She is able to repeat this 4-5 times before becoming overstimulated, beginning to hiss, hard swat, and bite at the tool. Interaction is ended. 8/3/26 FB73 Similar to my last interaction with her, worked on clicker training, she picks up on the game quickly and is able to boop her nose to the tool several times before becoming overstimulated. Will continue attempts but keep the sessions far briefer to maintain a positive experience for her before she can overstimulate and is no longer receptive. 8/12/26 FB73 More clicker training attempts, higher success with a mini session. She still lunges, hisses, and swats outside of the kennel door when approached for interactions and when interactions are attempted with cats around her. Did a few click + treat before switching to targeting. It takes her a few moments to figure out what I want before she presses her nose to the tool, followed by click + treat. Session kept to 3 repetitions and ended the interaction slowly.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Nym has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to history and behavior seen at the Care Center, Nym would be best suited in an adult home only.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nym was poking her head out of her den with dilated eyes once the handler approached. She left her den and quickly lunged at the door, hissing. The handler opted for holding the treats out for her through the bars of her kennel. She slowly approached and began licking the treats up. After eating them she began hissing at the handler again. the interaction was ended to reduce FAS. Nym is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite / is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
