Animal Profile

Tyson

Hello, my name is Tyson. My animal id is #218757. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/25/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tyson is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Tyson has been observed to snap at the leash when handlers are attempting to leash him. When Tyson arrived at the care center he initially presented with muzzle punching the kennel door, hard barking, and baring teeth. In Tyson's previous home, there was an incident where the owner's child had their hand in Tyson's mouth and Tyson's tooth scraped against their hand, drawing blood. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Tysons previous owner states he will jump up frequently in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see hand out on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful/ Potential for Defensive Aggression: Tyson was observed to hard bark and muzzle punch the kennel door when handlers place their hand near the kennel door. It is important to move slowly with Tyson, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Tysons previous owner states he has general anxiety. If Tyson displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash Reactivity: Tysons previous owner states he will lunge at small animals, dogs and strangers. Tyson may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout of On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Tyson has been observed to snap at the leash when handler are attempting to leash him. This behavior is able to be redirectable with spray cheese. We recommend walking and leashing them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
