Animal Profile

Stone

Hello, my name is Stone. My animal id is #215938. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 6 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Stone is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. Stone has shown to intensely leash bite and attempt to nip at staff through the kennel door at their shoe and when returning back into his kennel. He displays high arousal—panting, whining, vocalizing randomly, and hard barking—particularly when overstimulated by environmental triggers such as other dogs. He has required redirection with toys or treats which he has now lost focus, and on multiple occasions, staff have struggled to retrieve the leash from him due to the leash biting. While in a calmer setting, he is has shown to engage with handler through treats and enrichment activities. Medically, Stone is currently healthy.

Summary:: According to Stone's previous owner(s), Stone is friendly and outgoing and playful with unfamiliar dogs on leash. No information on familiar dogs was recorded. On/off leash wasn't specified. 05/25/25 Stone is introduced at the gate to a Female greeter dog while off leash at the gate center. Stone will approach the gate appearing nervous as he displays a slight tucked tail, making minimal movement. Stone will displace as he scents away from the gate as the greeter dog remains self-present. Stone will ignore the greeter dog, seeking attention from the handlers present. As the greeter dog attempts to solicit Stone's attention, Stone will look past her at the handler as if she isn't there, displaying paw raises in the process. Stone is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 6/20/25: Stone is at the front of his kennel with a loose body and barking at the handler, panting heavily and jumping on the kennel door when being unlocked. Stone is removed from kennel easily and walked down the hallway pulling hard into the yard. Stone in the yard is engaged with the handler, offering sit cues when the handler offers treats and is given plenty of treat scatters in the yard to help him stop panting less. Stone is able to focus on the treat scatters and explore the yard space freely, leaning into contact when coaxed. Stone is brought back to kennel and begins to whine when seeing other dogs on the sidewalk, bunny hopping all the way back into the hallway and into his kennel, panting heavily and vocalizing randomly at no clear trigger. Stone is placed into kennel and immediately whips around and grabs the leash, tugging it into kennel and is able to be coaxed with treats briefly before the handler pulls the leash out from under the kennel door. Stone when walked away from his vocalizing in his kennel and jumping on his door again. 06/19/25 The handler will approach Stone's kennel and he is visibly unsettled, displaying wide-dilated eyes as well as heavily panting. The handler will administer him a toy in which he bites onto and the handler will leash him simultaneously. They proceed outside for a walk. Stone will; carry the toy with him, displaying a relaxed frame and maintaining a moderate pace. He trots alongside the handler throughout the walk. Stone will take treats gently when administered. They will return to the facility where he enters the facility as well as his kennel with no issue. He is later moved to another kennel closest to the kennel room exit. 06/19/25 Stone was reported to intensely leash bite in kennel and attempt to nip at staff members foot through the gap under the kennel door. Stone is leashed with treats and taken on a walk with no issue. When returning however, Stone will kennel fight and attempt to redirect onto the staff member. Staff will quickly pull him into his kennel and he will latch on to the leash, pulling it inside. The staff used a horn for him to release but it doesn't work. When staff runs to grab the BT, by the time they return to his kennel, he had let go of the leash. 06/10/25 (Trainer Note): Stone is sitting in his kennel with a wiggly body as the handler approaches. He begins jumping up onto the kennel door but follows a treat lure through the leash. He pulls moderately to the canine training room and allows the handler to attach a drag leash. Handler works with Stone on moving from enrichment item to item with the handler. He responds to sit and left turn lures. Stone intermittently participates and accepts contact from the handler. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately back to kennel.

Summary (7):: 05/25/25: Stone walks to the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then escorted upstairs to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him. Stone appears touch-sensitive and skittish, particularly when touched on his head, neck, or back. During the nose-to-nose greeting at the gate, his tail raises in an upward angle, and his body becomes tense. He then begins displacement sniffing. Stone is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. 5/22/25: Stone is at the front of his crate sitting with a low body and wagging tail when the handler approaches, and does not approach the crate door when its being opened initially for the handler but continues to back away and tail wag. Stone is coaxed with treats through the leash easily, and brought into the behavior office. Stone is timid, but allowed all handling (See behavior assessment for more info). Stone is placed back into his crate with no issue. 5/21: A handler sees Stone being returned to his crate by a medical staff member and asks for him to be brought to the behavior office. Stone walks him, body hunched, tail low, but does perk when the handler calls to him softly. When attempting to swap leashes, Stone pancakes and tries to scurry away from the handler's lead. The handler lures him with sausages to put his head through their loop; he flinches and squints his eyes as he slowly puts his head through to grab the sausage. Once on the lead, he allows the medical staff member to remove their lead. Stone explores the room and readily accepts treats, body softening. He is offered a lick mat with cheese and tolerates being collared. Once on a drag leash, Stone shakes off and becomes wiggly with the handler. He does jump up and attempts to climb into one handler's lap to reach the can of sausages. He is easier to leash with sausage and more willing to put his head through the slip lead when he sees the sausage, no flinching or pancaking. Stone readily walks back into his crate, and the lead is removed without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Stone fearfulness and we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: In the prior home, Stone is noted to small animals, and cats and will lunge at them. Due to this, we recommend he is placed in a home with no cats or small animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Stone was surrendered to the care center due to his prior owners moving to a no-pet policy home and the child in the home developing allergies. His prior owner noted that he loves car rides. He knows the cue sit. He loves to cuddle and be held. His favorite thing to do is run through the house and play with his ball. In the prior home he is noted to have to leash bite, which has reflected in care. Stone will become overstimulated on walks become reactive toward other dogs on walks and when returning to the kennel. He will attempt to kennel fight other dog in kennel, leash bite, and will attempt to nip at handler shoes. In a calming setting he will engage in enrichment activities and accept contact from handlers. Stone is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: This dog displays resource guarding behaviors around high-value items such as food, treats, and toys. He becomes tense and may hover protectively when approached, indicating discomfort with having these items touched or removed. Training should focus on building trust through positive associations with people near valued resources, using trade-up techniques and gradual desensitization. Please the handout on Resource Guarding. Handling / Touch Sensitivity / Fearful: He is fearful of handling, particularly when his paws are touched, and does not tolerate nail trimming. These behaviors suggest touch sensitivity and a need for slow desensitization to paw handling, paired with high-value rewards and cooperative care techniques to reduce stress and build tolerance. Please see the handout on Handling / Touch Sensitivity & Decompression period. On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration: He exhibits reactivity on leash, particularly toward moving objects, small animals, and cats, often lunging in response. This behavior indicates a combination of prey drive and barrier frustration. Training should include counter-conditioning, focus-building exercises, and controlled exposure to triggers to reduce reactivity. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration. Leash-Biting: In his previous home, he was noted to jump and chew on the leash during walks, likely due to over-arousal or frustration. This behavior can be addressed through redirection to appropriate outlets, reinforcing calm behavior, and using chew-resistant leashes if needed during training. Please see the handout on Leash-Biting. Strength / Leash Pulling: He was also reported to pull strongly on the leash, making walks difficult to manage. Training should focus on loose-leash walking skills using positive reinforcement, appropriate walking equipment (e.g., front-clip harness), and consistent practice to improve leash manners. Please see the handout on Strength / Leash Pulling. Low threshold for arousal: Stone was reported to intensely leash bite in kennel and attempt to nip at staff members foot through the gap under the kennel door.
