Houdini needs emergency placement due to behavioral concerns. While Houdini has been highly social with staff and caretakers, he is beginning to deteriorate behaviorally as his length of stay increases. He enjoys treats, petting, and engaging in puzzle/enrichment toys. Houdini is becoming difficult to remove from his kennel due to leash biting, resulting in him grabbing a staff member's hand in the process. When out on walks, Houdini has become reactive and can be difficult to refocus at times. While in his kennel, Houdini licks the kennel bars. Medically, Houdini is receiving treatment for ongoing CIRDC symtoms.

I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Houdini so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Houdini's excessive jumping/ mouthy we recommend an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Leash-biting,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Basic manners/poor impulse control
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- In the care center Houdini has displayed high jumping on handlers.It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach his to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Leash biting/ poor bite inhibition- Houdini has displayed some leash biting/poor bite inhibition at the care center, which during an incident where he inadvertently nipped at a handler while engaging in leash biting. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition and Leash-biting. Anxiety- Houdini appears anxious at the care center, whining, panting and jumping on handlers during his assessment. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving his other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on general Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- At the care center, Houdini has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Houdini may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration-.
