Flipflop
Hello, my name is Flipflop. My animal id is #251439. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/6/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFlipflop is at risk due to behavioral reasons. She has been observed to be dog reactive and have a low threshold for arousal. When seeing another dog, Flipflop will fixate on them, and pull hard towards them with a tense body and rasied hackles. During her assessment Flipflop became overaroused and began jumping at the handler and then jumping up and biting the leash. With handlers Flipflop is observed to have a soft wiggly body and wagging tail. Medically, Flipflop is in heat.

Summary (7):: 4/21/26: Flipflop is sitting at the front of the kennel with a soft wiggly body and wagging tail. She is looking towards the handler with a soft face. Flipflop is easily leashed and she pulls out of the kennel. She is brought to the backyard where she does a dog-dog interaction (see dog-dog notes). Flipflop is then brought to another pen where she solicits attention from the handler. She leans into petting and rolls over on her back. She sits at the handlers feet and takes treats gently. After sometime, Flipflop is returned to the shelter. She pulls hard ahead of the handler with raised hackles as she is returned to kennel without issue. 4/12/26: (Assessment Walks) Flip Flop is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and dilated eyes. She lowers her body at the front as the handler unlocks the kennel to leash her. Flip Flop is easily leashed and pulls hard towards passing kennels and crates with a tense body. She is taken downstairs and brought to the street. She walks with a loose leash and relieves herself a few times. Flip Flop is then walked back to the shelter. A dog passes them and she stares at them with a tense body but is kept away. Another dog is in the driveway as they approach the shelter. Flip Flop tries to crawl under the driveway gate, she has to be pulled out from underneath. When entering the driveway, Flip Flop pulls towards the dog where she is standing on her hindlegs. She is then brought to the assessment office where she is social with staff and soliciting attention, she approaches with a soft wiggly body and wagging tail. She jumps up on the handlers and leans into petting. Flip Flop is easily collared. After her assessment, she is walked back to the kennel. Flip Flop tries to pull towards the passing kennels and is returned without issue. 4/12/26: It is reported that Flipflop was moving his pop up crate around the hallway and barking at other dogs.

Summary:: Friendly
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Flipfop so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the dog reactivity and resource guarding observed while in care we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Park: Due to the dog reactivity observed while in care We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Flipflop was observed to snap and bite the assess-a-hand during her assessment. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Fliflop's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. On Leash Reactivity: Flipflop is observed to pull hard towards other dogs with tense body and hackles raised on the street. While in the hallway she will pull towards pop up crates in the hallway and pull into other kennel rooms. Flipflop will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting/ Arousal: During her assessment Flipflop was observed to jump at handlers and begin jumping up and biting the leash. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Flipflop to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
