Dasher
Hello, my name is Dasher. My animal id is #236130. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/1/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - eviction.
Dasher is at risk due to behavior concerns. During her time in the care center Dasher has been noted to lunge, bare teeth and hard bark at handlers when they pass by her kennel. While she was staying in a crate the same behavior was seen causing her crate to move forward when dogs would pass. She has been noted to become tense, hover over her food, and hard bark when handlers approach. Dasher reportedly pulled hard and showed the hard barking behavior in her previous home but owner noted Dasher had no issues with other dogs. While waiting for a kennel space to be made at intake Dasher was seen lying next to two yorkies cuddling with them. With handlers she has been noted to participate in agility training and knows the cues “sit” and “paw:”. Dasher enjoys pets and engages for treats. Medically, Dasher was recently treated for diarrhea but is otherwise healthy.

I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Dashed was very friendly and was seen lying next to two yorkies outside cuddling while waiting for space. While inside she would lean into my legs for pets. She allowed all handling and walked right next to me while going to get vaccines. After vaccines, she did pull a small amount after being startled. She was muscled a small amount and eventually she jumped up into the kennel with no issues.

Summary:: According to Dasher's previous owner(s), Dasher is friendly and outgoing with other dogs. 10/22/26: Dasher is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches with hackles raised, alarm barking and paws at the fence. She pulls strongly towards the fence while barking, then stops vocalizing when the other dog disengages. She uses the bathroom and then reapproaches the fence with slightly lower hackles and soft high wags. She has perked ears and looks to the dog softly when they walk away again, and will disengage and reapproach intermittently remaining soft while sniffing nose to nose. She stands near the fence and seeks out treats from her handler with a loose body. Note from a previous stay: 09/14/25 Dasher is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Dasher doesn't greet the novel male dog, avoiding the gate. Dasher bares her teeth and proceeds to hard bark while displaying her hackles. Dasher is moved out of the male dog's sight and returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (7):: 10/29/26: Dasher is at the front of her kennel with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. Dasher is walked into the driveway; as there are a small and large dog present, Dasher notices, but doesn't react. Dasher is then brought to the closed yard and placed on a dragline. The handler uses treat lures to have Dasher jump over a hurdle; she does so smoothy when the bar is lower. As the handler increases the height, Dasher is able to jump over it a few times, but also runs around it instead. she allows pets and takes treats. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Dasher to her kennel with ease. 10/21/26: Dasher is at the front of his kennel, hard barking and vocalizing, when the handler approaches. He does not take offered treats but allows leashing and willingly exits the kennel. Dasher walks ahead of the handler through the hallways with mild leash tension. Once in the yard, he immediately relieves himself. He briefly sniffs the surrounding area, and then returns to the handler. He allows petting and responds to cues “sit” and “paw.” His body remains neutral. He briefly walks around the yard perimeter, looks around, and relieves himself a few more times. Dasher stays next to the handler but does not initiate further contact. Upon return handler clips the leash and returns Dasher to his kennel without issue. 10/15/26: It is reported that Dasher will become tense, hover over their food, and hard bark when handlers approach. When handlers enter the room it is reported that Dasher will bare teeth, lunge, and hard bark at handlers. 10/14/26: When handlers walk pass his crate in the office he is noted to lunge at the handlers feet while in the crate. 10/8/26: Dasher is observed to hard bark at dogs in her crate, and push her crate while doing so as dogs are near or walk past her crate. This is seen in different periods of the day for a couple days 10/7/26: Dasher is quiet in her crate, once the handler opens the crate, she begins vocalizing and spinning in circles. She is wagging her tail and tapping her paws. Handler opens the crate to present the leash and tries to push her head out if the crate. She is easily leashed and taken out towards the street. Dasher walks with mild pulling and stops to sniff around. She quickly walks back and forth, ignoring people that pass her. Dasher is then taken back to the shelter towards the assessment office. She approaches the assessor with a loose body. After her assessment, Dasher is returned to her crate without issue. *Previous stay at ACC: 9/8/25: Dasher stood neutrally at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. She walked to the BA room for her assessment. Dasher was aloof and unsettled throughout interaction. She would approach handlers with coaxing and treats. Dasher was returned to kennel without issue.
Date of intake:: 10/1/2026
Summary:: Allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 10/2/2026
Summary:: Tense and resisting restraint
ENERGY LEVEL:: Dasher is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Dasher.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and defensive behaviors observed while in care, we recommend an aduly only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Dasher has been observed to become tense, hover, and hard bark while in the possession of food. Dasher should be left alone while they are eating, and any time something needs to beremoved they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: During her medical exam, Dasher was reported to growl and lip curl. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dasher should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dasher's choice to approach a new person or thing. She may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful Defensive | Anxiety: Dasher's previous owner states that she will bark when startled and when disturbed while sleeping. During her previous handling assessment, Dasher was uncomfortable with interaction with handlers and was unable to settle - panting and pacing the room. During her current stay in the care center Dasher has been observed to wake up and begin growling, baring teeth, and lunging towards the handler while in their crate. It is important to move slowly with Dasher, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
