Animal Profile

Augie

Hello, my name is Augie. My animal id is #74206. I am a desexed male brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender - aco on 12/19/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Augie was placed at risk due to behavioral reasons; he has a bite history and was released for rescue placement by DOH. Augie's behavior in the shelter has deteriorated considerably, he is biting the bars and attacking his kennel. Placement as soon as possible out of the shelter would benefit Augie. He is otherwise healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Augie loves life and makes it clear from the moment you approach his door that he'd be thrilled to join you on the other side with welcoming tail wags and an eager little foot-to-foot dance of anticipation. He's as friendly as he is handsome and I've nicknamed him 'Mr. Enthusiasm' for the way he throws his whole heart and body into everything he does, including giving hugs! A good leash walker and seemingly house trained, Augie enjoys exploring on his own but is still keen to come, sit and stay on command for a treat reward and given the chance you'll find him bouncing around with a plush toy, only too happy to share. Easy to handle during our date and seemingly unconcerned by a barking dog being walked nearby, this good boy did previously tussle with a four-legged sibling so a castle where he alone can be king would suit him best. He's smart, sociable and self-confident and Augie can't wait to step out of his kennel and return to doing what he does best: having fun with family and friends. Visit our Staten Island Care Center and ask to meet Mr. Enthusiasm today, I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Summary:: Alert, reacted to dogs he heard while walking to his kennel.

Date of initial:: 12/19/2019

Summary:: Hard barking, jumping toward staff.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Augie was reported by his first owner to have a very high activity level. We have also found Augie to be energetic and enthusiastic, and to engage with cue training, toys, and games of "Fetch" in the yard. He is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: October 2019: Though initially timid, Augie has opened up to handlers, allowing touch and other interaction. Augie has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards passing dogs and humans in kennel and is unable to readily settle on his own. Once outside of the kennel, he continues to display social behavior towards handlers. 1/2/2020: A handler was returning Augie to his kennel when he became kennel reactive when passing another dog's kennel. He became over aroused and began to bite the lead then redirected and attempted to bite the handler's hands. The handler was able to quickly place Augie into the kennel, but was not able to remove the lead. The handler used a hook to remove the lead, but Augie began to bite the hook and pull it into his kennel. A second handler entered the room and went to the other side of the kennel and called him over. Augie released the hook and ran over. She closed the transfer door and the first handler was able to remove the lead successfully. 1/5/2020: Augie is showing signs of deterioration in the care center, including becoming more difficult to return to his kennel and concerning behavior while in the kennel (biting the bars, jumping at the walls).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: Single-pet home/ Recommend no dog parks: Due to Augie's bite history with another dog, we are recommending that Augie be the only pet in the home and not to visit dog parks.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog),Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Bite history (dog): In his previous home, Augie bit the other dog in the home multiple times. The other dog in the home and Augie got into an altercation over a bone and were separated. The next day, they were reintroduced to each other and Augie lunged at and bit the other dog multiple times until his owner pulled him off. Please see handout on Bite History. Bite history (human): While in a new home environment, Augie lunged at and bit two members of the new family, one bite breaking skin on a child's elbow and hand. Mouthiness: Augie has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Some pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Patrick's teeth make contact with skin). We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Augie puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see the handout on mouthiness. Kennel presence: Augie was reported to become dog reactive when other dogs pass by his kennel and hard barks. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Augie may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
