Resource guarding:: Papa Jean is a resource guarder and will growl/have a tense body when he is interacted with while eating and playing.

Bite history:: The client stated he barks nonstop while in his crate and has bitten them when they attempts to put a muzzle on. The bites were a bite and release on their hand but did not break skin.

Housetrained:: Partially

Energy level/descriptors:: Papa Jean is noted to have a high energy level in the prior home.

Other Notes:: Papa Jean will go potty on wee wee pads as well as while outside on walks. He is very sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements, Papa Jean will often flinch when startled as he has high anxiety. He is known to be dog reactive and will hard bark/show teeth, and lunge at dogs while out on walks. Papa Jean is crate trained to be left for up to 5 hours but is known to be very vocal while inside. He also has paw sensitivity and does not allow his nails to be trimmed. Papa jean knows cues "sit and stay" and loves to play fetch with a ball. He has a lot of energy so walks are very important to him. Papa Jean enjoys quality time with family and will usually be in whatever room people are in. He enjoys sitting in laps of those he trusts and can also be independent and want to play with his toys by himself.

Summary:: Due to Papa Jean's fearfulness, an assessment will not be condcuted at this time.

Summary:: According to his previous owner(s), Papa Jean is tolerant around familiar dogs but will attempt to mount when overstimulated. 07/21/26 Papa Jean is introduced to a familiar female while off leash. He readily approaches and will sniff the female before walking away to mark and sniff along the yard. Both wander the yard and will intermittently sniff each other.

Summary (6):: 7/25/26: Papa Jean immediately hopped into handlers arms ready to be taken out for his iso walk. Papa Jean stayed in the handlers arms until they reached the back of the facility where iso walks are done. During walk Papa Jean had loose body and showed excitement while on his walk. Once iso walk was completed Papa Jean was easily retuned back to his kennel

Summary (7):: 7/23/26 (Assessment): Papa Jean is lying in his bed as handler approached. He was easily leashed and picked up from his top kennel. While walking thru the hallway Papa Jean had a collapse episode where he just fell right over on his side. Due to other concerning medical observations during his assessment he was taken to medical. He allowed medical handling, one handler had a squeaky ball that they squeaked while the dr was listening to his chest. He did however resource guard the ball towards the end of his exam. It was decided that he would stay in medical so he was left with medical staff. 07/20/26 (PG): Papa Jean is laying on his bed as the handler approaches. He comes forward slowly and is leashed with ease. He gently climbs onto the handler and is carried out of his kennel. In the play yard, he sniffs around. After his interaction, he sits in the handler's lap for a few minutes and briefly falls asleep. He is returned to his kennel with no issue. 07/19/26 (PG): Papa Jean is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He attempts to push out of the kennel while being leashed, but the handler leashes him with ease and brings him out to the yard. He pulls hard and bunny hops at the end of the leash. In the yard, he explores and greets various handlers, jumping up on their legs. After his interaction, he is returned to his kennel with no issue. 7/14/2026 (Trainer Note): Papa Jean is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He readily takes treats through the kennel bars and is easily leashed. He allows to be picked up and carried to the behavior office. In the office he remains loose and wiggly. He engages in trade with several handlers in the room using small toy balls. He allows collaring as he leans in for pets. Papa Jean is taken back to his kennel without issue. 7/11/26: Papa Jean is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He would constantly back away and shake off the leash when the handler attempts to leash him. Once leashed, he is able to be covered with a towel and is then carried to the behavior room. While being held, he has a tense body and widened eyes. Once he is placed down on the ground in the room, he is comfortable exploring around with sniffing and would take a few treats the handlers would toss on the ground. He has a tense body when the handler re-towels him and picks him up and he is then taken back to his kennel with no issues.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Papa Jean behavioral history in the prior home, we recommend that he be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to his behavioral history toward dogs on walks, we recommend no dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Papa Jean came into the care center as an owner surrender due to not having time for him and his behavioral concerns. In the prior Papa jean knows cues "sit and stay" and loves to play fetch with a ball. He has a lot of energy, so walks are very important to him. Papa Jean enjoys quality time with family and will usually be in whatever room people are in. Papa Jean has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

We reccomend management and training to help build positive associations with people near high-value items. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: He also has paw sensitivity and does not allow his nails to be trimmed. This behavior suggests discomfort with paw handling and grooming-related procedures. Continued work should focus on gradual desensitization, positive reinforcement, and building comfort with routine care. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety/Fearful: Papa Jean is noted in the prior home to be very sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements, Papa Jean will often flinch when startled, as he has high anxiety.Papa Jean is noted to be fearful in the care center While being held, he has a tense body and widened eyes. We reccomend low-pressure interactions, allowing him to build trust at his own pace, and using positive reinforcement to increase his comfort during handling. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the prior home Papa Jean is known to be dog reactive and will hard bark/show teeth, and lunge at dogs while out on walks.Training should focus on creating distance from other dogs, and rewarding appropriate disengagement from triggers to help reduce reactive responses over time.
