Hello, my name is Teriyaki. My animal id is #250351. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/23/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTeriyaki is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care, Teriyaki has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be tense and trembling when the handler interacts with them. During intake, Teriyaki was observed to thrash intensely and growl at the handler. With time and a slow approach, Teriyaki has shown improved sociability with staff; recently noted to approach staff and allow petting with a soft body when in play-yard outside of the shelter environment. Medically, teriyaki is apparently healthy.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 3/23/2026
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history
Date of assessment:: 3/26/2026
Summary:: Teriyaki has been observed to be highly fearful while in care, noted to have a tense body and thrash on leash. When handlers interact, Teriyaki is observed to remain tense and trembling. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety, Teriyaki is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 3/31/26: Teriyaki will not approach the gate to greet the other dog. He is tense bodied and extends his nose forward to sniff.
Summary (6):: 3/31/26: (for Dog-dog) Teriyaki is at the front of the kennel, soft body as handler approaches, he becomes more loose as kennel door is opened. Teriyaki tries to push his snout out, but allows easy leashing. He exits with mild pull, mostly loose leash exiting MACC. Teriyaki is taken to play-yard, enters vestibule for a dog-dog interaction (See dog-dog notes). When in the vestibule, he does not engage with the dog at the gate however becomes wiggly-loose when familiar staff verbally greet him. Teriyaki is walked to another yard. Handler sits on bench. Teriyaki approaches, soft body, soft eyes and allows gently petting of face and neck. After some time Teriyaki is walked back to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 03/25/26: Teriyaki is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed easily and removed from kennel, walking with handler out to the driveway and subsequently the street for his walk. Outside he is tense and trembling, staring at people who pass by. He briefly sniffs around but does not settle so handler begins walking back toward the building with him. Teriyaki slowly walks back with handler inside, stopping to sniff and to stare at people he sees. He is brought to the behavior office while waiting for his kennel to be done and he continues sniffing and stops trembling but remains tense with a tucked tail. He is returned to kennel with mild leash pressure. 03/24/26: Teriyaki was brought in for an intake exam and is definitely a "go slow" candidate. He does not appreciate being pulled by the neck with a leash and would likely benefit from a harness in the future. He appears to be very scared rather than willful or defensive. Once out, he was gentle and sweet, leaning in for affection and seeking pets, head massages, and even hugs. As he warmed up Teriyaki tried to move closer to staff from across the room. 3/23/26 (KSV- PM)- Teriyaki was laying on the kuranda bed with a neutral body, handler bent down and softly spoke to him. He gave low growls but stayed on the kuranda bed, they held their hand up to his door and he again gave a low growl. Handler tossed in treats but Teriyaki stayed on the bed. Handler held their hand up again and he didn't growl, just stayed on the bed. Handler ended interaction.
Date of intake:: 3/23/2026
Summary:: Growling, thrashing on leash
Date of initial:: 3/24/2026
Summary:: Anxious
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Teriyaki so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Teriyaki has been observed to be very fearful, noted to be tense and trembling. When handlers place a leash on him Teriyaki begins thrashing intensely. During intake Teriyaki growled at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Teriyaki, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
