Animal Profile

Landen

Hello, my name is Landen. My animal id is #229754. I am a male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/17/2025.

Landen is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Landen has began to deteriorate in the care center, and has began to grab random items on the street on walks, and grab onto equipment such as a hose when being removed from kennel, making it difficult to get him to drop these items. Landen is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Landen has presumed CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/22/25 Landen is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Landen approaches the gate displaying a stiff frame and hackles. Landen walks away after marking in the direction of the novel female as she stands behind the gate. The novel female dog remains lingering adjacent to the door of the gate where Landen walks away from. Landen will walk back to th gate to scent the novel female dog before walking away once again. As he maintains his distance from the gate, he displays risen hackles while he displaces, scenting with his back turned towards the gate where the novel female dog stood behind. Landen will then whip around with no warning and charge the gate, hard barking and snarling at the novel female dog. She will walk away willingly on her own while Landen must be returned to kennel immediately due to the intensity of his reactivity. This concludes the interaction.

Summary (6):: 7/8/25: Landen was leashed with ease and taken for a walk on the street. Landen pulled towards other dogs passing in close proximity a number of times. His kennel had appeared clean and he relieved himself while outside. Landen spent time scenting around the trees. He sniffed a toy on the ground but did not pick it up. He walked past a food wrapper without showing any interest. After a short walk, Landen was returned to kennel. He pulled hard on leash at times. As handler was about to enter kennel room, Landen grabbed hold of a disinfectant spray bottle that was hooked onto the side of a trash can in the hall. Landen continued chewing it once it was on the floor. Handler dropped toys in front of him and a second handler tossed a treat scatter. When he let go of the spray bottle handler was able to kick it out of reach and returned Landen to kennel safely. His toy was dropped into kennel. The spray bottle did not appear damaged. 7/5/25: Landen was reported to grab onto the hose outside of the kennel room and hold on, having to be pet corrected off of the hose to get him to let go. Landen is also reported to grab onto random items outside. 7/3/25: Landen is reported to try and grab tree branches, and once grabbing them pulls them off the tree and begins to chew on them.

Summary (7):: 06/25/25 After putting Landen back, a staff member reports to the handler that Landen will fixate on water hoses during usage. While on a walk, he will pull towards a staff member using the water hose. As they return to the building, entering the side entrance, Landen will jump high at the hose spraying the pavement to keep it cool. The staff member says after they were able to keep him from the hose, putting him back in kennel was no issue. 06/25/25 Landen is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. Landen displays a loose frame as he is administered treats while in kennel. Landen is easily leashed and taken out for a walk. As they exit the building, Landen pulls towards other dogs with novel handlers. The handler will use directional leash pressure in order to keep him close. Landen is administered treats if he passes a dog he doesn't look at. Landen is returned to the facility due to weather conditions. He will trot his way back into the building, entering his kennel quickly upon arrival. 6/22/25: Landen stood neutrally at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Landen pulled towards pigeons. Landen relieved himself while outside. He was kept on a slip leash for duration of interaction. On the way back inside, Landon saw a pigeon on the ramp and jumped extremely high into the air and spun around while chasing it. Landen was returned to kennel safely. 06/21/25: ACS has Landen out for a walk and it is noted that he will hard bark and pull towards other dogs. 06/20/25: Landen is standing at the front of his kennel and will hard bark at the handler upon approach but will also take treats through the gate from the handler’s hand, displaying a loose and wiggly body. He allows the handler to place the leash over his head and is then brought to the assessment room. Once inside, a drag leash and collar are placed on him, and he roams the room freely. Landen is asked to perform multiple cues, sit, lie down, and paw, which he demonstrates in exchange for treats. He allows handling throughout the session, while also displaying signs of anxiousness and arousal, including heavy panting and dilated pupils. For more information, see behavior assessment. Landen is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. 06/19/25 While on a walk with a staff member, Landen will latch onto a cone on the way back to the facility. A staff member will come to assist by clapping, making Landen let go. Landen is brought back into the building with no issue. He is made Back Yard walks only as a result.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Landen be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No Cats- Due to Landen's high prey drive witnessed while in care, we recommend he be place in a home with no cats.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal: Landen is displays heavy panting, jumping on handlers during his handling assessment. While on a walk he was reported to grab onto a traffic cone in front of the care center, requiring a secondary to clap their hands and help remove the cone from him.Training should focus on building calm behaviors through structured routines, impulse control exercises like “sit” and “leave it,” and providing appropriate outlets for his energy through enrichment and positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Anxiety/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Landen is noted to bark at other dogs and lunge towards there direction while on walks.Training should include increasing distance from triggers, reinforcing calm behavior with treats or praise, and gradually desensitizing him to the presence of other dogs using counter-conditioning techniques. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Kennel presence: Landen is noted to hard bark and jump in front of his kennel door. Low Threshold for Arousal: Landen latches into random objects - hoses, cones, spray bottles, trees, etc. - and has a hard time being redirected away from them. On one occasion, an interrupter is used for him to release a hose. Please see handout on Arousal.
