Animal Profile

Toby

Hello, my name is Toby. My animal id is #200986. I am a male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 5/24/2024.

Toby is on the at risk list due to behavioral concerns. While Toby is nervous, he does show the potential to warm up with time and a slow approach with staff and caretakers, he is finding it difficult to return to his kennel due to stress. Toby will balk or pancake on his return to his kennel despite coaxing and using high-value treats. Medically, Toby has a wound.

Summary (6):: 6/27/24: Toby was leashed with ease and walked to the yard. He spent most of the time sniffing around and marking. Toby would approach handler when called over to them and accepted pets on his back. When handler placed slip leash back on, Toby lay down and rolled onto his back. Handler offered pets and then verbally coaxed him out of the pen. Outside the room to his kennel, Toby lay down and rolled onto his back again. He did not take regular jerky, so handler brought him to the BA room to get some high value treats. He was gradually lured back to kennel using cheese slices and handler assisted lifting his hind end into kennel. 6/19/24 PM: Toby was observed to pancake on the floor, refusing to walk back to his kennel. He took cheese but would not follow that trail. He was eventually coax with some leash pressure. 06/19/24: Toby is laying at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. When handler greets him verbally, he stands up and moves to the front of kennel; is leashed with ease. Toby walks with a loose lease in front of handler out on a street walk. He spends time scenting and relieves himself. Handler offered treats but Toby did not eat them. Once at the door going back to the room, Toby puts on the brakes. Handler uses verbal encouragement which he shows no response to. Directional leash pressure is used to return Toby to kennel.

Summary (7):: 06/11/24: Toby is laying down at the back of his kennel when handler approaches. As handler unlocks the door, he stands up, moves to the front, and is leashed with ease. Toby walks with a loose leash and sticks close to handler during his street walk. He checks in with handler often. Toby puts on the brakes on his way back into the room. Handler applies mild leash pressure and Toby returns to kennel safely. 06/03/24: Toby is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. Easily leashed and walks next to handler out to play yard. In yard, Toby is clipped on a drag lead and wanders yard looking for scattered treats. When called, Toby comes to handler and leans into their legs, allows petting all over. On return, walks behind handler and puts on the breaks. Handler uses mild leash pressure and encourages Toby back into kennel. 05/26/24: Upon approach, Toby was laying in the back of his kennel, eyes closed. Did not respond to handler's voice. Handler tossed treats into the back of kennel and Toby sat up and started eating them slowly. Used treats to lure Toby into leash. Gave some resistance when exiting kennel- pulling slightly back into kennel. Used treat lure and moderate leash pressure to exit kennel. On the way out to the yard, Toby stopped in place so handler used moderate leash pressure to guide him out into the yard. Once in yard, was able to clip leash while at his level, moving slowly. Another handler crouched down and called Toby over to them. He slowly approached handler, with a slightly tense body, and turned his body into them soliciting attention. Handler was able to give Toby brief pets. Walked back to kennel slowly, with a slightly tense body. Returned to kennel safely. 05/25/24: Toby was sitting, displaying a neutral body in the back of kennel upon approach. Leashed with ease and walked without pulling. Brought to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment. Was displaying a neutral body in room and tolerated assessment. Solicited some attention from handlers and took a few treats gently. Was able to be collared. When touching neck area, he flinched away but re-approached handler with soft body and wagging tail. Walked back to kennel with ease
