Animal Profile

Jazz

Hello, my name is Jazz. My animal id is #250577. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/26/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Jazz is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Jazz is significantly fearful in the care center, including growling, trembling, and avoidance of handling attempts and would not want to come out of kennel. Jazz during interactions will hide, growl when new handlers approach and remain trembling/low bodied. Jazz recently has been coming out of kennel on her own, and warming up to select staff by allowing contact but is still extremely shutdown in the care center. Medically, Jazz is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 3/26/2026

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no prior history

Date of assessment:: 3/29/2026

Summary:: 3/29/2026: Due to Jazz's fearfulness in the care center, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary (7):: 4/1/26: Jazz remains at the back of her kennel laying down and growling, displaying the same behaviors as last interaction. Jazz this time when leashed will immediately get up when the door is opened and walk all the way to the behavior office without stopping. Jazz in the room will begin to explore, sniffing the handler and her surroundings without looking for a hiding spot. Jazz will sit near the handler, sniffing around them and rubs into them while walking past with no obvious signs of discomfort. Jazz is taken back to her kennel due to the office being needed for another dog with no issue and allows the leash to be taken off with a tool. 3/29/26: Jazz is visited several times by her kennel, and at first will growl and move away but will eat some of the high value churus given to her when the handler leaves. Jazz towards the end of the day will begin not growl at the handler, let them open the door and leave the tray of churus and leave, still eating it when the handler leaves. 3/29/2026: Jazz is at the back of her kennel growling, remaining still and continues to growl while looking at the handler. Jazz when the kennel door is opened will begin to tremble while still laying down and when offered high value treats will ignore them, sometimes putting them into her mouth but spitting them right out. Jazz will begin to growl louder and whale eye the handler , looking away. The handler pulls out a fake plush dog, and when Jazz sees the dog she begins to pick her head up and look more curious, but remains laying down before going back to growling and looking away. Jazz's kennel is soiled, but the handler slowly walks into kennel, and leashes her slowly which she will flinch but tolerate. Jazz has to be helped out of kennel with leash pressure off her bed, but once in the room will pancake, but given time to process and she begins to walk on her own out of the kennel and all the way into the office, taking brief pauses but the handler waits for her to be ready again, applying no leash pressure. Jazz will enter the behavior office and remains in proximity of the handler, still low bodied, with dilated pupils, shaking but still seeking proximity. The handler sits next to Jazz and looks away and allows Jazz to sniff the handler, and go into a corner to sit down. Jazz when the handler moves will slowly come forward and lay on the floor with her head down, slowly not shaking as intense but whale eyeing and whining. Jazz will whale eye the handler when coaxed, so the handler continues to just sit next to her. Jazz when being returned to kennel will not want to get off the floor, but is slowly pulled towards the handler with leash pressure and once up begins to walk out of the room and into her kennel with no issue, allowing the handler to remove the leash slowly and goes to lay down on the floor

Summary:: snapped, had to be sedated

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jazz so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Jazz's fearfulness in the care center, we recommend she goes to an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Jazz's fearfulness in the care center, we recommend she is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Jazz gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Jazz, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Jazz to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Jazz would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
