Animal Profile

T-Rex

Hello, my name is T-Rex. My animal id is #225317. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/23/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

T-Rex is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

His name is T-Rex, hear him ROAR! T-rex came to us as a stray - so we don't have much information on his background. He has remained rather fearful in the stressful shelter setting, and is looking for a calm and quiet home where he can decompress and allow his true personality to shine through!

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: T-Rex was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 04.27.25 FB04 1-Growling, slanted ears, tense face, hissing. When he rolled onto his catnip, staff marked and removed themselves. 2-Growled, hissed, spat, tense face, lip-licked. Slowly picked up a front paw and slowly inched backward while shaking. Staff soft-talked until he rested into a loaf. Staff marked and left. 3-Hissed when lifting shor-line, growled and licked lips for several minutes. Growling got lower, and he rested into a position laying his chin onto his paw. Staff marked and left. 04/28/25 ACFR Standing at the front of the kennel, hunched forward, tense, with dilated pupils, low growling. As shoreline cover is lifted, he hisses and swats. Staff waits until he backs away, sits, and stops growling, and offers a crunchy treat, which he comes forward to take. Staff goes to put shoreline cover back and he begins growling again. Staff waits until growling ceases and he once again backs away, staff marks and leaves.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: T-Rex was resting on his bedding initially but became defensive when approached with a scratcher tool—growling, hissing, ears turned sideways, and eyes wide. He struck at the tool, ignored treats, and the assessment was ended to avoid further stress. T-Rex is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful/stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
