Animal Profile

Tinseltoes

Hello, my name is Tinseltoes. My animal id is #242757. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/1/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tinseltoes is at risk due to medical reasons. Tinseltoes arrived to us as a stray on December 1st and was diagnosed with parvovirus. He has been lethargic with a low appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Tinseltoes received Canine Parvo Monoclonal antibodies and continues to receive supportive care to keep him hydrated and encourage him to eat while he recovers from the virus. Dogs with parvovirus unfortunately cannot be managed in the shelter setting due to the risk of transmission to other dogs. Behaviorally, Tinseltoes displays some fear but allows all medical handling and warms up with a slow approach. He needs continued supportive care and treatments until he recovers from this infection (away from other young dogs and unvaccinated adults).

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Date of intake:: 12/1/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 12/2/2025

Summary:: When brought into the assessment room Tinseltoes was obsvered to be tense and fearful. Noted to have a stiff body, whale eye, pinned ears and was not receptive to treats. When the handler approaches to place a collar on him, Tinsel retreats quickly and hides under the handlers legs. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Tinsel is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 12/2/25: Tinseltoes is at the front of his kennel with a slight tense body as the handler approaches. The handler attempts to leash him, but Tinseltoes dodges their leash. He does this a few more times until the handler finally leashes him. Tinseltoes also backs away when the handler attempts to carry him out. After a few tries, the handler successfully carries out and places Tinseltoes on the ground. On the street, Tinseltoes walks slightly close to the handler with no leash tension; a few times, he sniffs the handler. After the walk, Tinseltoes is brought in for his assessment (see assessment notes); afterwards, the handler easily picks him up and returns him to kennel. 12/2/25: Tinseltoes has been observed to bark at a handler when they enter the room; when they approach his kennel, Tinseltoes low growls while being at the front. He only stops when they give him treats, which he doesn't take.

Date of intake:: 12/1/2025

Summary:: Social, wagging tail, seeking attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tinseltoes so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Tinsel has been observed to have a tense body, whale eyes, pinned ears and hides when handlers attempt to interact. In kennel Tinsel was noted to growl at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Tinsel, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
