Animal Profile

Sheba Love

Hello, my name is Sheba Love. My animal id is #222695. I am a female black brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 6 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Sheba Love is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Sheba Love has CIRDC and pneumonia and was recently hospitalized at an outside veterinarian. While she is now back in shelter, she will need continued hospitalization until she is eating well and able to be switched to oral medications. Behaviorally, she has allowed medical handling. Sheba Love has a $500 stipend to be provided to a New Hope Partner if pulled.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: According to Sheba love's previous owner(s), Sheba love has interacted with different dogs and is often described to hard bark, growl, and lunge at other dogs when on or off leash. 03/26/25: When off leash at the Care Center Sheba Love is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate approaches the gate with a stiff frame. Both dogs scent one another at the gate. Sheba love quickly escalates from low growling to muzzle punching the gate. The novel female reciprocates mirroring the same behavior before retreating to the handler for solace. Both dogs are immediately separated, ending the interaction. 03/20/25: When off leash at the Care Center Sheba Love is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Sheba Love approaches with hackles as she scents the ground. The novel male approaches and scents Sheba Love at the gate. Sheba, still scenting the ground, immediately whips into a prey bow with a forward frame and flagging tail. Sheba love scents the novel male who is still loose with a slow swaying tail. Sheba Love muzzle punches the gate with a hard face and lip quivers. Both dogs are immediately separated, ending the interaction.

Summary (6):: 04/13/25: Sheba Love was laying in kennel and had appeared to have low energy levels. Handler opened cage and she stayed put. Once she was leashed, she stood up and came out of kennel with a waggingtail. She walked and exlpored outside at a moderate/slightly fast pace and was returned to kennel easily. 04/10/25: Sheba Love was sitting up in her kennel. As handler approached, Sheba began wagging her tails with excitement. Handler opened kennel door but Sheba did not try to come out of kennel. Sheba solicited pets. Handler was able to pet Sheba on the head, body, and under chin. Sheba appeared calm and enjoyed pets.

Summary (7):: 04/01/25 (trainer note): Sheba Love was lying down in her kennel. She approached handler with a loose wiggly frame and was easily leashed and walked to the behavior office. In the room, she was provided with various enrichment items. She showed little interest and preferred to be affectionate with the handler. She had a loose, wiggly body and would approach and lean in for pets. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel with no issues. 03/27/25 (trainer note): Sheba Love was standing at the front of her kennel with a loose frame and tail wag. She was easily leashed and walked to the behavior office. When loose in the room, she remained loose and wiggly and would approach handler for pets. She engaged with enrichment items and would orient towards the handler between items. She would automatically "sit" with an enthusiastic tail wag, and was able to practice "take a breath". She was easily leashed and returned to kennel. 3/26/25: Sheba Love greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. She was noted as being in heat and drops of blood were observed on puppy pad. Sheba walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Sheba would tense and raise hackles when another handler/dog were approaching. Handler would have her stand off to the side where she was easily redirected with treats as they passed by at close distance. Sheba would eat treats scattered on the ground or take them hand fed. Sheba did not display dog reactivity when passing through kennel room. She was returned to kennel with ease. 03/20/25 Sheba Love is lying down in kennel as the handler approaches. She will rise as the handler calls her name in a high pitch voice and is taken outside for play group. She will exit the kennel room with a neutral frame, trotting her way to the exit of the building. Sheba Love will maintain her neutral frame until she reaches outside. As she exits the facility, she becomes tense, displaying raised hackles. She will charge a metal dog that is posted to the side gates outside of the building. She will quickly disengage once she realizes it isn't real. She will make her way to the back pens, being collared before a dog is in her sight. (See dog-to-dog in BA for more insight.) Sheba is quickly returned to the facility. She will tense up seeing other dogs with novel handlers, displaying raised hackles as well. She enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue.

Summary:: quiet solicits pets, calm, sweet

ENERGY LEVEL:: Sheba Love is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Sheba Love.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Sheba Love on leash reactivity and general anxiety, she should not go to a home with children under 13 No cats: Due to reports in the home of lunging at cats and small animals, Sheba Love should not go to a home with a cat/small animal Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to history in the home of lunging at other dogs, Sheba Love should to go home with another dog.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Sheba Love was continuously whining throughout her assessment. If Sheba Love displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on "generalized anxiety" On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In her previous home, Sheba Love has been observed to react to other dogs and cats on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Sheba Love may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and cats. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on "on-leash reactivity/barrier frustration"
