Bubbles
Hello, my name is Bubbles. My animal id is #221105. I am a desexed male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/22/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBubbles is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. A volunteer writes: Sometimes the way we express ourselves isn't always the right fit for the room. Bubbles has a history of enjoying playtime and he's actually someone who needs quite a bit of it, but the exuberance Bubbles has a tendency to display in playtime can come on pretty strong. Since his playtime moves usually aren't of the cuddly variety, particularly when they include lunging and swatting, he's looking for a special family to call his own. Bubbles likes his space and in his effort to create some for himself at the Care Center, we haven't really been able to get to know him well. And though we keep trying, I wish there was more I could tell you other than he's spectacularly unhappy here at the Care Center. Bubbles may like a regular interactive playtime routine as well as time to be in his thoughts and we know the right family is out there for him.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Bubbles was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. The owner stated that Bubbles has been displaying aggression towards her and the young children (6 year and 4 year old) in the home (swatting, growling, hissing and lunging unexpectedly). Police were called to obtain the cat as the adult and children were sheltered in the bathroom due to aggressive behavior from the cat. The owner reported that Bubbles was raised with the children as kitten. Bubbles was reported to be playful and friendly; however, he was observed to mount/hump the air or objects, hiss, growl, or pounce at the children's face a few days before the police was called to pick him up due to behavior reasons. He was not reported to spray; however, he stress urinated when the police transferred him into the carrier to bring to ACC. Bubbles had access to the 2 bedroom home; but, after observing these behavior challenges, the owner would occasionally lock him in the bathroom for safety reasons. Bubbles had access to self-play toys like mice toys and occasional interactive playtime with a fishing-pole feather wand. In addition, the children might play with their dolls around Bubbles personal space. There was a period of time after the holiday season late-December 2024 when Bubbles would vomit every day, this was likely a result of him eating small plastic/paper streamers and from the Christmas tree.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/28/25 FB32 Recovering from neuter surgery on 2/27/25. Lying down hiding in den with front limbs extended forward. When removing the den cover, he steps back and focuses on the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. Ignores treats offered on scratcher tool. Allows petting on the head, cheeks, and body but does not engage with the attention. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 3/21/25 FB32 Curled up hiding in den, hisses and lunges at den front door when removing den cover. When attempting to offer treats, he swats hard and steps further back into the den with a tense body, wide eyes, and ears tilted to the side. He begins growling while watching me tidy up his belongings. When slowly raising the den front door to take a photo of him, he continues to lunge and swat at the door. Remains frozen for the photo, then swats at the door again when returning it back down with the den cover.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Bubbles will need a new home adjustment period, due to aggressive behavior shown at home and fearfulness shown in shelter.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Bubbles is recommended for adult only home, due to aggressive behavior observed in previous home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Bubbles was resting on top of his den when approached. When the assessor opened the kennel door, he hissed and backed up further into the kennel, remaining on top of the den. Bubbles ignored treats, hissed continuously and kept a tense body. As the tool grazed his back once, Bubbles immediately started to strike the tool and low growl. Pickup not attempted. Bubbles is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
