Calipso
Hello, my name is Calipso. My animal id is #239866. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/25/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Calipso is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Calipso is a sweet, social cat who tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Calipso knows the world is big, but sometimes it feels just a little too big for a little kitty like her. A baby at only eight months, Calipso's been trying to learn where she fits but has found herself on a learning curve that she could use a little hand on. When I went to visit with Calipso, she tucked herself in the back of her cubby and waited to see what would happen next. She has some experience in a home, so we know that she's been a curious, friendly, playful and friendly kitten, but Calipso needs the chance to be those things, and the Care Center just isn't it. We'd love for her to get the chance to be the kitten she's meant to be, and we hope that can be with you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/28/25 PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT Calipso is sitting on the top shelf of her kennel with flattened ears and dilated eyes. She sniffs scratcher tool and presses herself into the back of the kennel when pet along her cheeks. When pet along her body, she continues to shrink away, and when the tool is removed, flees into her cubby. Pick up not attempted and interaction is ended to avoid increasing fear, anxiety, and stress. 11/26/25 FB73 Upon approach Calipso is laying on top of her den, pupils dilated, body very tense, lip licking, with ears facing slightly to the side. She is tolerant of some petting with the scratcher tool on the head and cheeks, flinching when petting is attempted on her shoulders and down her back, lip licking repeatedly as she is pet and remaining tense. When the handler stops petting and slowly pulls the tool away, she scrambles down from the top of the den and runs into it, sitting up pressed against the back wall. (Added to socialization list!) 11/29/25 Vol. Calipso was sitting up on the ledge of the main condo, with right right side wedged to the back, making eye contact with dilated pupils, whiskers pointing down, ears neutral. She then scurried through the portal, sitting up with her left side against the back of the cubby, blinking occasionally. While sweet talking, I hung up a toy and put up a scratcher pad and she seemed to relax. She licked treats twice off the tool extended through the portal and allowed petting with the tool. When I opened the cubby door, she flattened her ears and low growled. After a reset, she again pressed her left side against the back of the cubby, tilting her ears slightly but did not growl, and accepted another treat. Needs additional time. 11/30/25 Vol. Laying on top shelf with dilated eyes. Fled to cubby when spoken to from below. Quickly came back out, remaining crouched with airplane ears, and hissed when approached. But leaned forward to sniff Temptations and squeeze-up from the tool and eagerly ate. Darted in and out of cubby repeatedly but could not resist coming out for squeeze-up. Showed some interest in a pipe cleaner toy, but was more scared of hit, turning her head away. Was more interested in the laser pointer but didn't bat at it. 12/01/25 FB32 Lying down forward hiding in litter box. Tense body, wide eyes, ears tilted to the side, and hisses when spoken to and opening the door. Sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool. Allows brief petting but then sits up and turns head to face the back corner. When stroking body, she calmly walks out of the portal, tolerates petting by hand on her back, and then crouches down in the middle of the main kennel area. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: See relevant behavior flyers. Calipso has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Treat motivated, she has potential to be clicker trained to build a positive association with petting (see Enrichment Note below) 12/8/25 Lying down curled up at back of top cubby with head down and ears flattened. Low grumbles when opening the door and reaching close with treats by hand. Handler pauses until she stops vocalizing, then once she relaxes, Handler offered the treat that she sniffs and accepts. Her body softens and her ears are forward. Handler offers more treats to distract her and she allows petting but initially flinches. Handler repeats again by petting her head, she pauses, Handler clicks with mouth, and rewards her with another treats that she accepts. Handler completes 10 repetitions, occasionally being able to stroke along her body and she looks back.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old. Older, respectful children only. Counselor discretion.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Calipso is sitting in a crouched position in the back of her cubby, body tense, pupils dilated, and staring intently at the assessor as they approach and open the cubby door. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, Calipso briefly hesitates before stretching her neck and leaning forward to head bunt and engage with petting, lower body remaining tense as she head bunts the tool. She allows and leans into all petting with the scratcher tool but will periodically freeze, facing away from the assessor to avoid contact before returning and continuing to head bunt the scratcher tool and the assessor's hands. After about 30 seconds she backs away again, continuing to head bunt the tool when she is pet but not initiating contact herself. Later in the day the assessor has a second interaction with Calipso, who is now laying curled in on herself, ears pulled back, pupils dilated, and hissing when the cubby door is opened, no longer interested in interaction. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. Calipso is a sweet, social cat who tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
