Animal Profile

Cashton

Hello, my name is Cashton. My animal id is #232279. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/17/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cashton is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. He has tolerated and allowed all handling but was noted to become frantic during his intake exam, whining and vocalizing. Throughout his stay at MACC, Cashton has been observed to have a very low threshold for arousal. He has been noted to frequently jump up on handlers, sometimes escalating to snapping. During a recent incident, Cashton snapped at a handlers hand and made contact when attempting to leash him. Medically, Cashton is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary (7):: 07/30/25: (It should be noted for this interaction, Cashton is 'under the weather') and tagged to be moved to Dog iso) Cashton is sleeping in back of his kennel, as handler approaches he stands and moves to front of kennel with low head and neutral body. He is easily leashed and taken to play yard. Cashton is clipped top drag-line in yard. Cashton is notably low energy, showing little interest in treats. Cashton engages with handler enough to follow around yard, but maintains low head with neutral body. Cashton is leashed and returned to kennel; he baulks just outside of his kennel, this might be due to the loud dehumidifier just out-side of the kennel. treats are ineffective, he is muscled back into kennel. 7/27/25- ACS reported when attempting to leash Cashton he was jumping up and snapping at handler's hand. They used treats but he showed no interest, they used a squeaker which momentarily distracted Cashton. When they went to put the leash on, he snapped at handler's hand catching their thumb and released. No broken skin. 7/25/25: Cashton is jumping and barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be distracted with treats while the handler leashes him. Once leashed, he pulls on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would slightly walk in front of the handler and would stare to receive treats. He was comfortable approaching the handler and would sit for treats. He had no reactions to dogs or people. He pulls ahead on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 7/23/25 PM WALK: Staff member reported that while existing the room, Cashton was repeatedly jumping up and snapping towards the handler. Handler had to straight arm him as they are exiting the room. On the street he walked with no observed issues and was returned to kennel without issue. 7/23/25: Cashton is easily leashed and brought to the yard for a dog dog interaction. While on leash he pulls hard and then jumps towards the handler without warning. The handler has to straight arm Cashton to keep him away. The handler tosses treats however he is unreceptive. When returning to kennel the handler is able to easily clip their leash and return Cashton. 7/18/25- Cashton is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash with a slight pull towards spots to sniff. He has no reaction to any stimuli and is social with handler. He gently takes treats from handler's hand. He does check ins and is rewarded. He is taken for his assessment where he is easily collared and is social with handlers. He follows the command to sit and gives paw, he is given a treat. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 7/17/2025

Summary:: allows all handling for exam and tasks, very food motivated

Date of initial:: 7/17/2025

Summary:: Whining/vocalizing, hesitant to enter kennel, muscled in

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cashton so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children (Under 5): Due to Cashton's exuberant nature and lack of impulse control, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Cashton is observed to frequently table surf and jump on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Anxiety: Upon intake Cashton was observed to whine and intensely vocalize consistently. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Arousal: Cashton has been observed to quickly become over aroused and begin jumping up on the handler. Cashton has also been observed to jump towards the handler while snapping. During one instance Cashton snapped at a handlers hand while they were attempting to leash him. Cashton should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Cashton. Please see handout on Arousal.
