Ground Ginger
Hello, my name is Ground Ginger. My animal id is #249634. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/2/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Ground Ginger is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Ground Ginger tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Ground Ginger is a sleek little mini panther with silky black fur, soulful eyes, and the quiet elegance of a cat who knows she's fabulous. 🖤✨ This demure lady prefers to keep things low-key. She'll politely accept treats (without ever mussing up her perfect paws, of course) and can often be tempted out of hiding with a little catnip and gentle patience. Ground Ginger came from a hoarding situation and may never become a super social cat - but that doesn't make her any less special. She's looking for a calm home with someone who appreciates the beauty of simply sharing space with a quiet companion. Ground Ginger may not demand attention, but her soft presence and mysterious charm make her the perfect roommate for a fellow introvert. If your dream pet is a peaceful, low-maintenance little shadow with movie-star eyes, Ground Ginger is waiting to meet you. 🐾

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Ground Ginger was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/09/26 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, feet and tail tucked with face and body tense. She turns her head slowly to make and maintain eye contact as I open the kennel door and she begins low growling as I place a catnip toy and a treat next to her. She appears quite stressed so I don’t push hands on interaction at this time. I speak to her softly and end the session. She does not investigate the toy or eat the treats offered during or after our session. Needs more time. 4/13/26 FB79 Ground Ginger is in the back of the kennel, with an arched back, a tilted ear and wide eyes when i greet her; her body is tense with her tail wrapped and had no care for treats that i offered. i didnt attempt contact and left her a toy with catnip. 4/17/26 FB61 Lying in hidey box, body and face relaxed with her ears forward and her head resting on the ground, eyes closed. She raises her head when I reach towards her and attempt petting and she tolerates it while flattening her ears, flinching and leaning away. I keep the interaction brief to reduce stress and I leave her treats and a catnip toy to enjoy later. 4/23/26 FB58 Sitting in her box and slightly hidden, she hisses as I place her treat tray in front of the box. She pokes her head out and appears slightly curious but hisses at me again and sniffs at the tray, eating a small amount - she is too nervous to eat more. I turn the box so the opening is facing the front and when I return with a linen to cover to cage front partially, she is stepping out of the box a little. 5/7/26 FB58 Laying on top of her kuranda bed, somewhat tense with eyes wide - she hisses and low growls when I offer my hand out. She hisses with pets with the tool but there are some slow blinks throughout, just hard to tell if they are actually comfortable slow blinks. Ate a bunch of dry treats for me as I was re-setting her cage so should be a great candidate for clicker training!! 5/10/26 FB06 Ground Ginger is lying in her bed, eyes are neutral, ears are forward. I place some squeeze up close to her bed and she sits up and hisses. I offer the scratcher and she hisses at it. I am able to give her a few back pets before she walks off to the other kennel. 5/11/26 FB79 Ground hissed when I entered the kennel as she laid in her bed curled up. When I offered treats on a tray she watched the tool closely and had no interest. I used the tool to try and attempt petting but after a few pets she pulled back harshly. 5/22/26 FB79 At the top of the kuranda bed, Ground Ginger is slightly curled up with a neutral face and forward ears. She stares at me with her eyes soft and listens as i speak to her softly with no reaction. However when i slowly bring in the tool her eyes dilated and when i pet lightly on her back/body she tensed up shifting her weight and leaning in to hiss at the tool with her ears now flat.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Playful,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Ground Ginger came from a home with about 30 other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans. Please see behavior flyers for more information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ground Ginger is inside of the litter box with a low body, wrapped tail and her eyes wide when the assessor opened the kennel door. She remained still with no reaction and when the tool was brought in slowly she did not lean in to sniff but tolerated all petting on her head and cheeks while starting to slow blink. However, when the assessor attempted to pull the litter box forward she quickly jumped out and retreated to the back of the cubby where she sat with a tightly wrapped tail, wide eyes and her left ear tilted. Pick up was not attempted but she continued to tolerate pets all over his back and body with no further reaction. 5/06/26 FB61 Ground Ginger displayed similar behaviors as her previous session. Ground Ginger is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
