Bellamy arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Bellamy has been observed to be fearful. During his assessment Bellamy was reported to growl after collaring and lifted his lips towards handlers. Recently another handler attempted to place a collar on him. Bellamy head whipped and bite the handler on the handler. This bite was a bite and release that cause two punctures and two grazes. Due to the detailed behavior we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 15.4 lbs

Summary (6):: 1/28/26: Bellamy is lying down in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily pre-clipped leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Bellamy walks ahead with little leash tension. He shows no interest in passersby; he also stops to relieve himself. Upon entry, the handler returns Bellamy to kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 1/27/26: Bellamy has been observed to growl and hard bark in kennel whenever someone is near it. 1/X/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Bellamy is very difficult to leash. 1/21/26: Bellamy is at the front of his kennel feet on bars soft body when handler enters room. He takes treats and is easily leashed with a pre-clip leash due to handling sensitivities. He is walked in the yard where he pulls ahead of handler exploring. He initially baulks when returning to kennel but when some pressure is placed on the leash he goes in without issue. 01/15/26: Bellamy is at the center of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but does not accept any, he dodges the leash a few times before being successfully leashed and taken to the street for his walk. Outside Bellamy ignores people and dogs he sees and will pull mildly. He stops to sniff occasionally and walks with handler without issue. After a while he is brought back inside and allows handler to clip his leash before he returns to kennel without issue. 1/9/26: IT is reported on the behavior board that Bellamy did not want to walk but jumped on the bench, sat on handlers lap and was ok to be carried. 1/9/26: Bellamy is lying down in kennel. As the handler opens the kennel, he goes further back into his kennel; and as they attempt to leash him, Bellamy begins to low growl. The growling increases with every attempt, and Bellamy snaps at the leash. Once the handler leashes him, Bellamy stops growling. The handler pulls him closer to the front, and places a blanket over his head. As a staff member holds the leash, the handler picks Bellamy up, carries, and places him on the ground. On the street, Bellamy walks ahead with little to no leash tension. After the walk, the handler brings Bellamy inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and walks Bellamy to his kennel. As the handler attempts to return him, Bellamy refuses to enter the kennel; he then begins to thrash as leash pressure is added. A second handler uses a leash as a sling and places it under Bellamy. Both handlers bring Bellamy into his kennel and remove their leashes.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bellamy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Bellamy's fearful behavior and potential for defensive aggression we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity: During his medical exams and during his assessment, Bellamy was observed to growl and lip lift during certain handling. It is important to always go slow and give Bellamy the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bellamy should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bellamy's choice to approach a new person or thing. Bellamy may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: During intake and medical exams Bellamy was observed to growl at staff either when initially approached or during handling. It is important to move slowly with Bellamy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Bellamy to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
