Animal Profile

Earl

Hello, my name is Earl. My animal id is #198844. I am a desexed male orange cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/28/2024.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Earl is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Earl was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/30/24 Provided chicken filet. Earl was laying in loaf in den with dilated pupils and erect forward-facing ears. Licked lips, didn't eat even the pieces left inside of den. 5/4/24 Inside den, in a partial loaf, eyes normal, appears slightly wary, looking about, alert, sniffs treats and catnip but doesn't eat. fbs1647. 5/9/24 Earl as inside his den. He immediately hissed upon approach. I removed the den cover to get a better visual and he swatted and hissed t the door. After stopping, I reached into the den with the tool and Earl kept striking and hissing at the tool. Interaction ended early. 5/10/24 Low growls from inside the den and strikes at the scratcher tool when attempting to interaction. Left alone to reduce stress. 5/12/24 Resting in kennel behind the Shoreline cover, in loaf position. Came forward to peek around the edge and sniff, then ate treats offered through the bars and licked squeeze-up from my finger. Meowed when I pulled back a corner of the cover, then paced around the cage and stretched. Offered more squeeze-up, but this time pounced gently on my finger from the back of the kennel. I waited a few minutes, then left more treats for him. He retreated to his den as soon as I left. 5/14/24 Resting inside the kennel alert with eyes wide. He scans the room watching from a afar. Placed offered treats by the front but ignores it. When left alone and interacting with a neighbor cat below him, he quickly hisses and strikes through the kennel door. High FAS and left the area to reduce stress. 5/16/24 At front of kennel meowing for staff's attention, rubbing against bars. Provided treats and gave neck pets-he fell into them. Enjoyed head pets too. Gave a few back strokes, tail began to sway, staff ended interaction on a positive note. When locking kennel Earl reached on out grabbed hand without claws. 5/18/24 Inside den looking at me with wide eyes, paw on edge of den. Approached front of kennel. Eating dry treats already on the floor of kennel. Went into other kennel, to the front, sticks paw through bars. Slowly open door slightly with scratcher tool offering squeeze up. Grabbed hold of scratcher tool with claws. End of interaction. Soon afterwards inside den again. Ate dry treats tossed into kennel. 5/19/24 Resting in den. Came out when I went to open the door, but then pounced forward and swatted at my fingers, without claws. I waited a minute to let him calm down, but swatted again when I went to open the door, then moved to the other side of the kennel, behind the Shoreline cover. Ate a few treats through the bars, but then reached paws out and batted around, stress meowing. Sprayed a feather toy with catnip and he played with it through the bars for about 5 minutes, remaining behind the cover. When I tried to raise a corner of it, he swatted at my hands and meowed. Seems triggered specifically by removing the cover / opening the door (consistent with last week). *GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Playful,Insistent,Affectionate,Sweet,Social,Bold

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,Overstimulation,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Earl has a bite/scratch history in the home and in-shelter. There are also multiple staff reports of him reaching out of his kennel in attempts to swat staff nearby.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: See bite history. -Earl attacked a 3 year old child and when one of the parents went to protect the child they also became injured. It was the first incident that broke skin and Earl might be ok with older children. -On 5/22/24 in-shelter, staff brought adoption clients into the cat holding room. While showing the adopters a cat that was next to Earl's kennel, Earl hissed once and then he was quiet. Shortly after, Earl stretched his paws outside of the corner of the kennel, and scratched staff's left hand, below her thumb. It broke skin and left a scratch. After the scratch, he continued to reach his paws all the way out of the kennel and bat several times.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: In his first assessment Earl tolerated petting for a little while and became overstimulated. He interacted with the observer, solicited & appreciated attention, was easy to handle and tolerated all petting. In a second assessment Earl still showed behaviors indicative of overstimulation. Currently Earl jumped down from atop his den upon approach to solicit attention, rubbing against his kennel door & the scratch tool. He head-bunted, fell into neck pets and raised hips high during multiple back strokes. His tail flick and swayed throughout the interaction, but he didn't act on his overstimulation for well over a minute. He hissed and warning-swatted the scratch tool. The assessor ended the interaction before escalation. Earl is a friendly, outgoing cat that gets overstimulated consistently. He is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat/scratch/bite/is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and reported from the home, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
