Animal Profile

Terra

Hello, my name is Terra. My animal id is #243854. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/16/2025.

Terra is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Terra was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/20/25 Vol. On top of den throughout interaction. Curled up and rested her head down for a second. Lifted head. Wrapped body tighter.  Hissed. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Crouched position.  Swatted at scratcher tool. Offered squeeze up on Crouched position tool.  Swatted again.  Partly sliding blanket off of den so I used a hook on pole to place it back up on top. Left felt square sprayed with Feliway on top of den. 12/21/25 Vol. Terra appeared very anxious. I was able to put a dish with squeeze-up in the feral den. She came forward to eat the squeeze-up but then smushed herself against the back of the den. While I talked to her for a little bit, she was very focused on where my hands were. I put a shore-line cover over the kennel door. 12/22/25 FB73 Terra is sitting up at the back of the den, stiff as she observes the handler. When the kennel door is opened and interaction is attempted, she hisses, spits, and lunges. A gravy treat is placed on a tray and slid to her and after a few seconds she pokes her head out of the portal exit to lean over and eat it. 12/23/25 Vol. Sitting on top of her den growling, then ran into her den when I approached her kennel. Tried to lure her out with Squeeze-ups but she ignored them. Put some tuna mixed with gravy treats inside of her den and she immediately started to eat. Wasn’t interested in playing with any toys at this time. 12/26/25 Vol. Terra loves to play! Initially, she was curled up inside the den with her tail wrapped around her body. She quietly meowed and tasted a little Churu offered on an extendable stick, but she was not motivated to leave the den until I got her attention with a laser light. She chased it all over the double kennel. Afterwards, she continued to play a peacock feather and a small catnip mouse which I left with her. 12/28/25 Vol. Terra was in her den. I got her playing with the peacock feather - but only from inside the den; she wouldn’t come out. I offered her squeeze-up on the scratcher tool a little too quickly after we were playing, and she swatted at the tool. I gave her a few seconds, gave her squeeze-up in a dish, and she poked her head out to eat it. She kept her eyes on me while she ate. I slowly lifted the black den cover, and she hissed and swatted at the Plexiglas cover. I went back to her kennel a while later and talked to her through the closed kennel door. Again, she kept her eyes laser focused on me and would not return a slow blink. 12/30/25 Terra was resting on top of the den. Soft meows when spoken softly to then hisses, and soft pats at the scratcher tool when attempting to make contact. She ate offered treats but remains wary with her surroundings avoiding contact. Ended to help reduce stress. ~GAN!

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Terra was crouched sideways against the back wall on approach, watching from afar, alert with wide eyes and ears erect and forward. She sniffed the scratcher tool and briefly allowed petting along the head and body. She displayed lip licking throughout, then randomly hissed and swatted at the tool, ending the assessment. Terra tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
