Pre-Screener Form

Milo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care, Milo has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal and be rope reactive. Noted to head whip during contact and jump up on handlers while mouthing them with moderate pressure. Milo will also grab handlers' items such as their treat pouch and their shoes. While on leash, Milo will bite and tug on the leash while growling. When he is unable to get the leash, Milo will begin growling at the handler. With handlers, Milo is receptive to the cue "sit" and is receptive to treats. Medically, Milo is apparently healthy.

Summary (4):: 10/12/26: As handler approaches Milo is at the front persistently barking and pacing in his kennel, once the handler begins to unlock his kennel he would be at the front with a wiggly body. He is easily leashed using treats and removed from kennel with ease. He is then taken to the play-yard where he would relieve himself with ease. He is walked around the perimeter and has a moderate pull forward. Handler would then walk into a pen and place Milo on a drag leash. Once placed on the drag leash, he would relieve himself and begin to dart back and forth in the pen, to which afterwards he would sit in front of the handler and a treat is then fed to him. Shortly after, Milo would jump onto the bench and would allow the handler to pet his underside he would become relaxed with a neutral body, slowly turning and allowing the handler to pet all over. Handler would then get up and would speak to another staff member at the gate, Milo would then follow shortly after and begin to growl and bark towards the handler. Milo would then quickly attempt to grab the handlers boot, but quickly backs up after biting. Handler is then able to quickly lasso him and remove the drag leash. Milo is then kept on a short leash and is easily clipped and returned back to his kennel with ease. 10/11/26: Milo is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed using a treat lure, to which he is then taken out to the play-yard. He had a moderate pull forward and quickly relieves himself upon reaching the top of the stairs. Shortly after, he is then brought inside of the first pen where he is placed onto a drag leash. He would continue to relieve himself in various spots. Milo would then approach the handler with a loose body and a treat is then presented, he would quickly sit and the treat is tossed. Handler would begin to walk around the pen with him, asking him to sit various times throughout the interaction which he would remain receptive towards and is rewarded each time with a treat. Milo would begin to bite on the drag line, which the handler is able to use squeaker sounds and treats to quickly redirect his attention. Shortly after, he is then easily leashed and returned back to his kennel with ease.

Summary (5):: 10/10/26: Milo is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body and mid level wags. He is leashed without issue and pulls moderately outside. He mouths the handler as they clip a drag leash on, then redirects for a toy thrown. He plays fetch for a while, trading between a tennis ball and squeaky soft toy. He plays independently with the toy in between, rolling on the ground mouthing the toy. He leans into pets, displaying mild arousal with prolonged pets, mouthing and jumping but is receptive to the handler turning their body and having him sit for a toy. He showed moderate curiosity in dogs walking by the yard, bouncing towards the fence with a loose body and mid level wags. He did not vocalize or display frustration behaviors. Milo became more aroused with time, jumping high towards the handler for toys. When the handler would turn their body, he began jumping towards their back, grabbing their treat pouch/bite stick. He would growl while pulling them towards him. He redirected for toys, continuing to engage in fetch, but would return to the handler displaying the same behaviors. When the handler would create distance, he began to attempt to herd them, mouthing their shoes while circling them. The handler went to switch leashes and he leaped face level to grab the leash, tugging it while growling. The handler dropped the leash and offered a toy, he wrung the leash and took a couple minutes before taking the toy. Anytime the handler would attempt to grab the leash, he would run back over and leap face level and then begin herding them while growling. He would mouth their hands, treat pouch, and bite stick with moderate pressure. He had no interest in treats. After many attempts, the leash was secured and Milo began leash biting. It took multiple minutes to unclip the drag leash as he would head whip and mouth the handler, then continue leash biting and jumping high towards the handler's face. He leash bit while exiting the yard and did not take a toy, but stopped leash biting on his own when going inside. He entered kennel on his own and the leash was removed without issue. 10/8/26: Milo is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking through the hallway, Milo picks up a toy, but drops it as soon as they're about to leave the driveway. Milo walks with moderate leash tension and doesn't react to people or dogs. Milo turns around to leash bite; in the times he does he disengages with treats or when the handler straight arms the leash. upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Milo to his kennel.

Summary (6):: 10/07/26 [am]: Milo is at the front of his kennel hard barking and vocalizing when handler approaches. He is easily leashed with treats (takes with soft mouth) and exits the room with no issue. Milo pulls moderately ahead of the handler in the hallways but has no reaction to pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside he immediately relieves himself in the driveway and pulls hard to cross the street. Handler is able to cue him to sit and give few seconds to calm down. Milo starts leaning onto the handler seeking attention. He readily accepts pets and shows wagging tail when handler starts talking to him in soft voice. Milo continues walking with reduced pace and no leash tension next to the handler. He has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. He looks back at the handler when called and is distractive with squeaker toy sound. His body is neutral during the walk. Upor return handler clips the leash and bring Milo back into his kennel with no further issue 10/05/26: Milo is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is offered treats but does not accept them but he allows leashing and exits kennel, following handler out to the street for his walk. Outside he is placed on a harness and turns to the leash as if he is going to bite it but he does not follow through. He walks with handler outside pulling moderately and stopping along the walk to sniff relieve himself. He is walked past people without issue and he shows no interest in dogs he sees, when passing dogs in close proximity he will stare at them but he is not tense and does not need to be redirected by handler to continue forward without issue. Milo is eventually brought back inside, he is returned to kennel and his leash is removed, interaction is ended shortly after. 10/4/26 - Milo is at front of crate with loose body when handler approaches, he is easily leashed up from his harness and given a toy to hold to curb leash biting. Handler notes that the front clip of harness causes the leash to awkwardly tangle into his front leg which in turn caused Milo to bite the leash as a response, once handler switches the clip to the back clip leash biting did not happen again however pulling still occurred moderately throughout the walk. Did respond to treats and verbal cues very well and after would go back to pulling in front of the handler interested more in sniffing, was not reactive to dogs or people when outside. When returning back to kennel he is easy to unleash and return.

Summary (7):: 10/3/26 (PM): Milo is at the front of his crate with a soft body; he is easily leashed and brought out the hallway. Milo is brought out to the street, and he walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to people or dogs. Throughout the walk, Milo turns around, exuberantly jumps on the handler, and then turns back to walking forward. He is very receptive to treats, as he sits on command or jumps and stands on his hind legs as the handler holds some in his hand. At one point, Milo sprints forward, turns around, and bites the leash; he readjusts, and goes slightly goes up the length once. He growls while doing so, but stops when the handler goes to take out a treat; they toss it to him. Milo attempts to bite the leash in the same manner, but the handler shortens the leash; they eventually give him treats. The handler brings Milo upstairs, but since his crate isn't ready, they bring him into the office downstairs. There, Milo jumps on the handler repeatedly for treats or attention. Other handlers give him enrichment and the main handler gives him spray cheese. Milo then rubs his body against the handler's legs repeatedly, in a back and forth manner; he also allows pets. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Milo to his kennel. 10/3/26: Milo is reported to leash bite to the point of growling and tugging the leash. When the handler walks him upstairs, and Milo can't get the leash, he growls at them. The handler is able to return him to his crate. 9/29/26: Milo is at the front of his crate with a neutral body and wagging tail, he is easily leashed and taken out of the crate. He is walked to the elevator and begins leash biting mildly, he is redirected with toy. Milo takes treats offered to him with a soft mouth. Milo is walked to the street and will occasionally bounce around and do zoomies around the handler exuberantly. He pulls moderately on a harness. On the way back to shelter he begins leash biting. Treats are not effective at first, but when a treat bounces off his face he stops and chases after it. Handler keeps tossing treats as he is walked to the assessment office. He greets the assessor exuberantly, running around the room. After his assessment, he is returned to his crate with treats. 8/30/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Milo likes to grab onto the leash while on walk 8/29/26: (Volunteer notes) Milo is a very sweet dog but did a lot of leash biting and was going after my treat bag a little aggressively 8/23/26 (Assessment): Milo was standing at the front of his kennel with both front paws on the door as handler approached. He was easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). While on his walk he maintained a neutral body and walked slightly ahead of handler while lightly pulling. After his assessment he was returned to his kennel with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Milo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control and a low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Milo has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Leash Biting: Milo is reported to bite and tug on the leash while vocalizing and growling. When he is unable to bite the leash Milo will escalate to growling at the handler. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: Milo has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to head whip during contact and jump up on handlers. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Milo to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
