Telly
Hello, my name is Telly. My animal id is #226924. I am a female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/11/2025.
Telly is on the at-risk list due to behavior and medical. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, Telly is on a 6 month quarantine due to a reported encounter with a racoon in her previous home and receving wounds of unknown origins. Telly will need to complete her 6 month quarantine period in a secure area.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Hi there! My name is Telly and I've been at the Manhattan ACC since May (yes, you read that right)! I arrived as a stray so the staff don't know what my life was like before coming to ACC, but I had various injuries that I'm recovering from really well. I only require a little extra paperwork to be filled out and a few extra vet visits this year because one of my injuries was likely a bite wound (now fully healed). I'm thankful for everyone at ACC taking such good care of me, but I think I'd like to find my forever home now. So what are you waiting for? Ask about me today!

KNOWN HISTORY:: Indoor Cat Previously lived with: Adults, Children Behavior toward strangers: Prefers contact on their terms, Hides initially Behavior toward children: Tolerant Behavior toward cats: Plays gently, tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Stress meows, nips, hisses Bite or Scratch history: On 5/9/25 in the early afternoon, Telly, normally being an indoor cat, had escaped and encountered a raccoon and was "viscously attacked" by a raccoon in the fire escape. The owner heard Telly scuffling and he went out to help his cat. He noted that the cat began to act aggressively towards him and his family members since the attack and was not allowing to be handled. On 5/11/25 at around 1 pm, the owner was trying to prepare to bring his cat over to the Manhattan Animal Care Centers to surrender her. He had gone over to where the cat was situated and attempted to capture Telly to put her in a carrier. Telly was fearful and redirected onto the owner's arm, scratching him severely and breaking skin. Telly immediately went under the couch and hid there for a while. Due to him and his family members being afraid of handling Telly, the owner called 911 for assistance with Telly and to receive medical attention. The owner was brought to his local hospital and received a tetanus shot and treatment for his wounds. Litter box training: Yes, had access to 2 uncovered litter boxes with scented litter. Energy level/descriptors: Low (mostly lays around) Other notes: Described as a friendly, affectionate, and independent cat who prefers contact on her own terms. Spent most of her time in the living room or at the window. Plays rough - (mouthy, grabs, claws out). Got interactive play time once a day. Likes to scratch on cardboard and horizontal surfaces. Enjoys having her coat brushed, struggles or squirms when picked up or held, stress meows when placed in a carrier. She’s independent and likes a peaceful environment and limited human interaction but still enjoys receiving love and attention just at her own pace. Eats Fancy feast wet food and temptations treats.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/23/25 FB26 Appears unwell when approached inside the den, slowly retreating and hissing at the scratching tool through the side portal door. However, when she remains still, She allows petting, with her ears tilted to the side. Ended the interaction to minimize stress. 6/9/25 FB47 Telly was quiet but displayed normal behavior and mentation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness. Counselor discretion is advised.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 05/19/25: Telly is a shy, timid, and independent cat. She was hiding in the den curled up with a tense body and wide eyes. She sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and then leans back when reaching close. When pet on the head, she begins low grumbling and lip licks when receiving cheek rubs. When stroking her body, she looks back and then she hisses and remains tense when applying gentle upward pressure on her side. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 06/10/25: Telly's behavior has slightly improved from the initial assessment; however, she still displays fearful behavior and she may vocalize with stress or disengage from attention during the interaction. She was hiding in the den resting, curled up with her head down and tail wrapped around her body. When spoken to and opening the door, she perks up and tucks her front limbs under her body. She sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and tolerates petting on her head, cheeks, and body; she is unbothered and does not engage with the attention. When applying gentle upward pressure on her side and chest to nudge or slightly lift her body, she whines, lies down on her side, and pushes against the tool with her limbs. She lip licks and continues to tolerate more petting and attention at the end. Telly tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
