Animal Profile

Blue Baloo

Hello, my name is Blue Baloo. My animal id is #239989. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Blue Baloo is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. Blue Baloo arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing concerns. His previous owner described him as a friendly and outgoing; also very high energy. During his stay, Blue Baloo has been highly social and treat motivated with staff. Recently however, he is showing concerning poor impulse control and signs of social hyperarousal. Blue Baloo as been observed to persistently jump on handlers and at times pushes off staff with his front paws. This is most prevalent during walks. While he is treat motivated, he is not consistently able to be redirected. Medically, Blue Baloo is apparently healthy.

My boroughbreaker writes:Blue was super interested in the lakes and seems like he likes to swim. He also absolutely loved fetch and chewing the ball after. It seems like he would love chew toys. He was such a sweetheart and was so social and so full of love. Blue was also amazing with snacks he never snatched them and always waited for them to be given and took them out of my hand so gently. He's very strong but wasn't lunging he just liked to move fast and was very interested in squirrels. He was occasionally interested in other dogs in a playful way. Blue also had tons of energy and even after walking for hours he was happy to run / walk more. Also I didn't check the box for I listen to commands because I didn't try any but he responds to his name well and sat for treats every time. He also did great on stairs. Blue will truly brighten someone's home and life. A Volunteer Wrote: This might make you cry, but you don't have time because you need to RUN to adopt this dog who has lived with cats, dogs, and kids: When asked about Baloo, his previous owner said, "I love him with my whole soul and am so glad I got to be his owner, even if it wasn't forever." We are honoring them both while Baloo is at the shelter by showering this playful, friendly baby with love, and it is the lightest lift given that he is the giver of endless kisses and tail wags, especially when belly rubs are involved. We would be so thrilled if you would take over as his new devoted owner, this time forever!

Summary:: 10/29/25: Blue Baloo greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. He then methodically barks.

Summary (4):: 11/30/25: Blue Baloo is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats offered by handler and walks out the kennel pulling moderately toward the dogs he passes, Blue also vocalizes once toward the dogs. Upon exiting the room there are multiple dogs in the hallways and Blue is frantic, spinning around and pulling toward them. Handler attempts to get Blue to sit for treats but he jumps impatiently toward the treats and is difficult to settle do to all the stimuli around him so handler allows him to take the treats which he accepts with moderate pressure. Once a path is cleared for Blue he walks out to the street, pulling hard along the way. Outside he continues to pull hard, stopping occasionally to sniff and to relieve himself. He walks for a while with handler, passing people on the street without issue. After walking for a while Blue is brought back inside, his leash is clipped and he is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 11/29/25: Blue Baloo is standing at the front of the kennel with loose wiggly body. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. Once out, he eats treats and kibble that is on the ground. In the hall he jumps towards handler with loose body but he is on a short leash so is able to be kept down. Handler ignores blue and continues walking. He proceeds to walk forward to the street as well but then notices a second handler and continues to turn back towards them and pull towards them, soft body. While walked on the street, handlers do not engage with Blue, they do not make eye contact or offer treats. He finds a toy on the ground and plays with it, carrying it by its arm and shaking it. He returns to kennel without issue. 11/28/25: Blue Baloo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He would readily sit in front as handler begins to unlock his kennel, once the door begins to open he would begin to jump onto the kennel bars. He is then easily leashed using treats and removed from kennel where he would have a hard pull ahead of the handler. While walking towards the garage door, Blue Baloo would then turn around and begin to launch himself towards the handlers face with a closed mouth. This would continue 2-3 times before actually making it out to the street. Handler would toss treats, Blue would remain receptive and take them. Shortly after, he would then turn towards the handler and jump towards them again. While crossing the street, Blue would begin to exhibit the same behaviors with an opened mouth. Handler has to continuously straight-arm him as treats weren't able to redirect his attention. Handler then decides to walk back towards the shelter, at this point he would remain with all four paws on the ground. Handler then decides to keep him on a short and tight leash as they walk back to his kennel, the leash would get caught in his cone as he went back into his kennel, he would then thrash and the his cone came off. Leash was safely removed and interaction was then ended. 11/27/25: Blue Baloo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, pawing at the kennel door as handler approaches. He is then easily leashed and removed from kennel, where he would begin to bark at the neighboring kennels and would pull very hard out of the room. He is then taken for a street walk, where he would continue to pull hard ahead of the handler. Once out on the street, he would begin to throw himself towards the handler and begin to bounce off their body. This behavior would continue, but was redirectable with treats. He would continue to jump up high throughout the walk. Blue would relieve himself in multiple spots and would watch dogs with a tense body and attempt to pull hard towards them throughout his walk. After the walk, he is then clipped and kept on a short and tight leash. He is then easily placed back into his kennel with no issue.

Summary (6):: 11/27/25: Staff report that Blue Baloo began lunging toward them during their walk, when a member of K9 behavior arrived to assist and took the leash from them he began lunging toward them as well. He is redirected with treats and upon returning to kennel he is reported to intensely kennel fight. 11/25/25: Blue Baloo is quiet initially as handler approaches kennel. Blue Baloo becomes loose, begins to pant mildly when handler unlocks door. Blue Baloo tries to push head out kennel, door is braced by handler's leg. Blue Baloo is leashed, and exits with very hard pulling and runs to end of leash. Blue Baloo allows easy clipping to harness, pulls less when outside of building. When on sidewalk Blue jumps up and pushes front paws on to handler with significant force, is loose bodied and immediately cued into a sit for treats without issue, Blue Baloo does this several times on walk, however once around corner from MACC is walking with very mild pulling is not jumping on handler. Blue Baloo is social with handler, checks in frequently, take treats. Blue Baloo walks back into MACC, mild leash pressure is used to return Blue Baloo into kennel. 11/25/25: ACS reports that Blue Baloo is difficult to return to kennel, baulking hard and trying to push back out.

Summary (7):: 11/15/25: Blue Baloo is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is leashed and brought out the kennel. When exiting, Blue barks once without looking at the kennels; he barks again and then jumps towards the handler before opening the door. On the street, Blue walks ahead of the handler tension on leash, gradually easing it as the walk continues; he also shows no interest in passersby. Several times, Blue Baloo turns to the handler and jumps and barks at them with a soft body. He sits for treats, and after the handler gives him treats, Blue does the same behavior, even while walking. While crossing the street, Blue jumps on a parked car, and the handler pulls him off. Once entering the building, Blue Baloo whines and barks at the handler. When the handler stops giving treats, he vocalizes again. The handler is able to clip their leash and return Blue Baloo to his kennel. 11/7/25: Blue Baloo is sitting towards the back of his kennel on his kuranda bed upon approach. He is easily leashed and removed from his kennel where he would have a hard pull out of the room and begin to start barking at the other kennels as he passes by. Blue is then easily clipped to his harness and removed from the building for a street walk. On his walk he would have a hard pull ahead of the handler, all while having a loose and wiggly body. He would easily relive himself and pull much harder towards spots he was interested in sniffing. Blue Baloo would continue the walk with no issue and is easily returned back to his kennel shortly after easily. 10/31/25; Blue Baloo is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead and would stare at dogs and people. He is able to be redirected with treats. He would pull hard towards pigeons as they were close by. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 10/29/25: On whiteboard, it is noted that Blue Baloo "seems dog-friendly", additionally is noted to attempt to mount staff when "over-stimulated". 10/24/25- ACS had Blue Baloo in the play yard in a pen, K9 handler came into the pen. Blue greeted them a loose and wiggly body, he gently takes treats. He always handler to remove the slip lead from the other handler. When going to take him back inside to go for a street walk Blue baulks at the top of the stairs. Handler bends down and softly talks to him tossing treats. He slowly makes his way back into the building and goes to the street. He Pulls hard out to the street and once on the sidewalk he has a moderate pull. He is social with handler and has no reaction to any stimuli. He is taken for his assessment where he is social with all handlers, taking treats with a soft body. He is easily collared and sniffs around the room. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue

Summary:: Loose and wiggly, food motivated, muzzled, difficult to keep still

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Blue Baloo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children (under 13): Due to Blue's exuberant nature and on leash reactivity, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Handling/touch sensitivity,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Blue's previous owner states that he will have accidents in the home a few times a week. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Blue's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl when a toy in his possession is touched. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Blue's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During Blue's behavior assessment he was observed to exuberantly jump on handlers at times in a social manner and was observed to table surf at times. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Social hyperarousal: Blue Baloo quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up forcefully. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Blue Baloo to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or escalates, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Blue Baloo. Please see hand-out on Arousal. Handling Sensitivity: Blue's previous owner states that he will lunge when held/restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Blue to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. On Leash Reactivity: Blue's previous owner states that he will lunge towards dogs, small animals, cats, and people. Blue will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
