Animal Profile

Lima

Hello, my name is Lima. My animal id is #84859. I am a desexed female brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/27/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Lima was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Lima is highly fearful at the care center, especially of having a collar put on her, freezing when one is brought near her after previously snapping when an attempt was made to put on her. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: I'm Lima and my head tilt game is On Point. Perhaps it's how my soulful eyes stare into yours or the way my brows furrow into the cutest puppy wrinkles, but I am just really C-U-T-E cute! While it's tempting to pet me, I prefer a slow approach until we get to know each other. I'm only one year old and I've had a rough time lately. I was abandoned near a police station, so I'm not feeling very trusting of people these days (Understandable, right?!). I'm a sensitive girl and with a patient, kind person, I can learn to be confident and more relaxed so that we can enjoy life together.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 53 lbs

Date of intake:: 12/27/2019

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Information from finder)

Resource guarding:: Yes, Lima snapped at the finder and the finder's dog over food.

Other Notes:: Snapped at finder when attempted to place a collar on her neck

Date of assessment:: 12/29/2019

Summary:: In the assessment room, Lima approaches handlers and allows slow petting, taking treats. When a collar is brought near her, she freezes. As she previously snapped at a person who attempted to collar her and she is giving a clear warning that she is uncomfortable is not collared and a handling assessment is unable to be completed. 1/15: A a second attempt for an assessment was made, though Lima continued to increase distance from assessor, lip licking and whale eyeing.

Summary:: Here at the Care Center, Lima's body language when introduced to novel dogs indicates that she is uncomfortable around other dogs. Lima was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Lima be placed in a home with no other dogs until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed once Lima has adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. The Behavior Department recommends reward-based, force-free training only to desensitize and counter-condition Lima using toys or treats to help her associate other dogs with positive experiences. 12/31: Lima was successfully collared today. She is introduced to a novel male dog and is initially nervous when she greets him. But as the session progresses, Lima offers a quick bounce before walking away. When she checks in with the male, her posture heightens, places her paw on his back, and positions herself to mount. 1/2: Lima became reactive at the gate today when greeting a novel male that was becoming aroused. As the male raced around the pen, biting and shaking his drag leash, Lima began to hard bark and grumble as she followed him alongside the gate. Due to the arousal levels from both dogs, an off-leash interaction is not conducted. 1/15: Lima returns to playgroup after being cleared from CIRDC. Handlers were unable to successfully collar Lima with a clean collar due to her fearful behaviors - whale eyes, tucked posture, and attempts to flee. Handlers suspended the attempt and conducted a gate greet with Lima on the handler's lead. She displays a frozen posture and hard stares when introduced to a novel male. Lima becomes fixated on the male and pulls hard towards him with high intensity. When in close proximity, Lima displays a short lip and stiffens further.

Date of intake:: 12/27/2019

Summary:: Head shy, allowed handling

Date of initial:: 12/29/2019

Summary:: Tense, trembling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Lima so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. At the care center, she displays a medium-high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/14: Lima was easily roped and led to the assessment room for an interaction. She accepted treats directly from handlers hands and a loose body. She would avoid direct touch and give whale eyes initially but allowed to be collared while being fed treats. She engaged in a food puzzle game and caught on very quickly. At the end of the session she rushed towards the neighboring dog before returning to her kennel. 1/19: Lima was wagging her tail at the front of her kennel upon approach. She was easily roped and brought out for an interaction. She was very loose with the handler and allowed to be pet on her head, neck and along the length of her body while leaning in. She would solicit attention by jumping up, and brushing up against handler. An unfamiliar staff member entered the room and she growled but readily recovered and was able to be distracted with treats while staff remained in the room. She responded to the cue "sit".

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Lima is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Lima has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Lima should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Lima associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Lima is highly fearful at the care center, especially of having a collar put on her, freezing when one is brought near her after previously snapping when an attempt was made to put on her. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Lima is reported to have snapped at the person who found her over food. She should be left alone when eating. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: Lima is fearful with handling, especially when a collar is introduced, freezing at the sight of it and snapping when an attempt was made to put one on her. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lima is fearful at the care center and with her finder and snapped at the finder. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
