Grumble

Hello, my name is Grumble. My animal id is #216355. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/10/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Grumble is at risk due to behavior concerns. At the Care Centers, Grumble accepts treats and shows a neutral posture, but he does not actively seek attention. During his intake, he was initially tense but softened as staff interacted with him. Grumble escalated to biting a staff member on their hand when they attempted to grab his leash. He exhibited similar behavior during his exam, quickly turning his head with an open mouth when a staff member touched his hind leg. Medically, Grumble is diagnosed with CIRDC and is receiving treatment. Grumble also has a right perineal hernia. Grumble is passing stool adequately despite weakness in right rectal wall.

Summary:: During Grumble's intake, Grumble was tense but then loosen his body posture. When a staff member attempted to grabbed his leash, he bit them n the hand, breaking skin on the index finger, palm and back of the hand. Later, during his intake exam, Grumble head whip with an open mouth towards a staff member when they touched his hind leg. Due to this quick escalation Grumble will not receive a handling assessment.

Summary (7):: 12/23/24: ACS report that when clipping the leash Grumble began biting the leash. When the hook was used to remove the leash in kennel, Grumble bit the hook once. 12/16/24: Grumble is standing at the front with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out to the yard for a walk. He remains neutral bodied throughout walk, sniffing his surroundings, occasionally giving a small tail wag, and relieving himself. He does not solicit pets but does softly accept treats. He is returned to kennel without issue. 12/11/24: Grumble is standing at the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He is offered high value treats and while distracted with them is double leashed He is taken out of kennel and walked to the yard, he pulls moderately when walking with handlers and enters one of the play yards. Grumble is offered more treats and takes them from handlers quickly and intensely but without applying pressure to handlers hand. He uses the bathroom outside after a little and once finish stands at the center of the play yard, occasionally looking up at handlers and briefly staring. He is clipped and returned to kennel where he is observed to baulk and thrashes slightly but upon a second attempt is returned to kennel without further issue. 12/10/24: (LATE ENTRY): Grumble is standing in his kennel, facing the door. He is not interested in treats and will dodge the leash when presented. Vienna sausages and squeakers are used to distract him long enough to secure two leashes on him. He comes out of kennel without issue and is walked in the yard. He walks slightly ahead of handlers, light pulling on leash. He relieves himself and then will stand neutral body in the pens randomly staring at one of the handlers. He is walked back to the kennel and lifts his leg to step in then backs up handlers toss treats but need to muscle him into kennel. He goes in but then turns quickly, barking, neutral body and pushing his head against the door. He allows handlers to use the hook to remove the leashes.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Grumble so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Grumble's behavior in the Care Centers, Grumble should go to a home with olde children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Grumble be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Grumble to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Grumble to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Grumble has displayed fearful defensive behavior as well as handling sensitivity in the Care Centers. While he has displayed a soft posture, Grumble once escalated to biting a staff member and head whipping at another. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Grumble feel comfortable with new people engaging in some handling such as grooming and medical handling. Please see the handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Bite history (human): Grumble has bitten a staff member, breaking skin. Please see the handout on Bite history. Leash Biting: Grumble has been observed to bite the leash when handler attempts to clip their leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
