Pre-Screener Form

Ghost is at risk for behavior reasons. Ghost can become easily over aroused when interacting with people. He is strong dog who is quick to put his mouth on people. When being brought to the care center, he jumped up and ripped a handler's sweatshirt. Ghost was unable to get through his handling assessment due to immediately jumping up and mouthing, however he has been manageable to go on walks. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Since Ghost came to us as a stray, we don't have any information about his previous home or past experiences. Ghost is a friendly, strong dog who can get overly excited quickly. When aroused, he may escalate to jumping up and using his mouth, so he will need an experienced owner who understands canine behavior and can provide consistent structure, clear boundaries, and positive guidance. Helping Ghost learn to manage his excitement and develop better impulse control will be important to his success. Ghost is looking for a committed, knowledgeable adopter who can help him channel his energy, build good habits, and set him up for success.

Ghost has a soft body and ignores people passed on the walk. Ghost shows interest and attempts to put his front paws against cars parked close to the sidewalk. When heading back to the shelter, Ghost maintains a soft body but only pulls a mild amount. Ghost's leash is easily clipped, and he is easily returned to the kennel. 10/26: Ghost is easily leashed and pulls hard in the hall and down the ramp. As he has his nose to the ground, the handler is able to rope-harness him to help manage his strength. They continue on the walk. A second staff member is walking alongside them, and Ghost jumps up with a soft body, open mouth. Handler pulls him back, gives him a moment, and they continue. Ghost pulls towards trucks, attempting to jump up on them. He allows all handling to have his harness undone and returns without issue.

The staff member then stands up, and Ghost, with a soft and exuberant body, jumps up towards a different staff member. Ghost then grabs his drag leash before being distracted and sniffing at the floor, where staff gets their leash on him. Ghost is then brought on a walk where he keeps a calm body and exhibits mild pulling, being responsive to the staff. Ghost allows staff to clip his leash and balks before entering his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ghost significantly lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Ghost is easily aroused when interacting with new people. He is quick to use his mouth. When initially meeting a staff member, he jumped up and bit onto their sweatshirt, causing it to tear. When staff attempt his handling assessment, he turns and start mouthing with mild pressure. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Ghost to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Ghost. Please see the handout on Arousal as well as handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. Strength/leash pulling: Ghost is a strong dog. He can pull very hard on leash. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward-based training to not pull while on leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
