Hello, my name is Chiquita. My animal id is #177536. I am a female gold dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 1 weeks old.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Chiquita is at risk due to behavior concerns. Chiquita is highly fearful in the Care Centers, often thrashing, biting, and alligator rolling when staff attempt to leash her, making her difficult to manage. Her owner mentioned that she has bitten other dogs in the past, though the bites were not severe. Despite this, her owner describes Chiquita as a social, affectionate, active, playful, and vocal dog. Medically, Chiquita is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Chiquita came in and was very tense in her carrier. I tried to get her out of the carrier in the admissions office where she became loose and was darting around the whole room and hiding under the computer. I was able to leash her but she started to thrash and bite the leash so hard that she was starting to bleed. At this point a staff member in admissions got a staff member from K9 behavior to help me. After some back and forth with Chiquita we were able to towel her, pick her up, walk her upstairs and place her into her kennel.

She gives a slight wale eye as handler kneels down to open kennel but is mainly aloof and stares at the kennel wall. Handler places a towel over Chiquita and begins picking her up. She begins squirming slightly around and cowers deeper into the kennel, handler is able to lift her. She begins visibly shaking across her entire body and continues to wale eye handler, handler repositions towel over her head and stands with her for a bit before placing her into a kennel with more space for her. Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior/ Separation anxiety: Chiquita's previous owner states that she will become anxious and destructive in the home when left alone. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Chiquita will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Fearful Defensive: Chiquita has been observed to be highly fearful, alligator rolling, thrashing, and biting the leash while she is one leash. Chiquita's previous owner states that she will hard bark and growl when startled. It is important to move slowly with Chiquita, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Chiquita's previous owner states that she will hard bark and growl at strangers, children, and cats while on walks. Chiquita will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Chiquita was observed to bite and attempt to chew through the leash during intake. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
