Pre-Screener Form Lyric is a sweet male dog who is still adjusting to life at the care center. He can be initially fearful of new people and environments, especially loud noises, which can easily spook him. With a little patience and gentle interaction, Lyric warms up quickly once he begins engaging with staff and shows his softer, more trusting side. He will do best with a calm, understanding adopter who can give him time to settle in, move at his pace, and help him build confidence in a quiet, supportive home.

Summary (6):: 2/10: Lyric is easily leashed with the help of a jerky treat. He walks out into the hallways barking. Once outside, he is brought to greet a female large mixed-breed dog at the gate. He has a wide wagging tail, barking repeatedly until walked away. He is brought around the building on a walk, then into the yard, where he is let off leash. He allows for a handkerchief and a necklace to be placed over his head. He runs about the yard briefly approaching staff and volunteer then quickly moving onto the next thing, toys, treats tossed (unable to settle). When he is returned to the kennel, he grabs the handler's leash, lightly pulling it into the kennel. Treats are tossed, and he releases. 2/9 Lyric is standing at the front of his kennel and barking. He is leashed while being distracted by a treat, but then quickly bites and releases the rope. He is brought out, and Lyric is a little frantic, first going for a treat on the floor, redirecting his attention and jumping up at a nearby staff member holding a treat, who then throws it and Lyric chases after that. He sniffs the treat on the floor, then leaves it and begins pulling down the hall and to outside. He is brought to the yard where he relieves himself and explores the perimeter for a couple of laps. Lyric is offered a treat and he accepts it gently from the handler's hand. Lyric is easily returned to his kennel. 2.6 Lyric is standing at the front of his kennel, he is easily leashed and is walked around the building by two familiar staff members. He is taken to the yard and a drag leash is placed onto him. He was exploring the yard, sniffing around. At one point, he jumps onto the bench and when one of the staff members begin to pet him, he displays overarousal. He hops off the bench and begins to jump up at the staff member. He positions himself to mount and the staff member grabs his leash, stiff arming him. The staff member walks away once he settles. He redirects his attention to the second staff member and begins to jump up on their leg. The first staff member grabs the leash and walks him away. Lyric begins jumping onto the handler holding the leash. He is clipped and then taken on a walk to redirect his energy. After a few minutes he is taken back into the building, into the meet and greet room. He remains soft and sniffs around. He is then returned to his kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 2.3 Lyric is at the front of the kennel. When leashing him, he is given a long-lasting treat, and is somewhat head shy, avoiding the loop until the staff is able to leash him. Lyric is taken on a walk and pulls a moderate amount. He barks at people passing in the building, and barks at nothing in particular while walking for a little bit. Lyric pulls a moderate amount and has a soft body while being walked. Lyric is then brought to the yard and accepts gentle pets with a soft body. He is easily returned to his kennel. 2/2: Lyric is at the kennel front but retreats when the slip lead is presented. Treats are used, and he comes forward for them, retreating again. He will jump up and mouth at the leash, but it is easy to retrieve. Lyric is given a long-lasting chew and the handler is able to secure the leash. He is brought to the yard, and a drag leash is attached. He remains close to the handler, following her to the bench. He accepts pets but is fearful of a tent blowing in the wind outside. He is lured through the loop of the leash with a treat and hard barks at a volunteer in the hall. He runs into his kennel. 1.29 When approached, Lyric moves to the back corner of her kennel. He has a tense and fearful body with a tucked tail. He barks and avoids the leash until staff are able to get the leash on her. Once the leash is on Lyric, he walks easily out of the kennel. Lyric is brought for a walk, where he walks with a neutral body, high head, and tail that is down but not tucked. He pulls a mild amount and is responsive to the handler. Lyric allows for the leash to be clipped and is easily walked to his kennel.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Lyric is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Lyric is reported to show destructive behavior in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior, but we suggest to future adopters that Lyric will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Lyric lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression: Lyric gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Lyric, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Lyric appears anxious at the care center, avoidant of the slip lead, unsure about exiting his kennel. If Lyric displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity: Lyric has shown reactivity on leash towards people, dogs, and other animals. He will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Lyric is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
