Geenie

Hello, my name is Geenie. My animal id is #242368. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/23/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Geenie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Geenie was in her foster home she had a bite incident believed to be over a resource This bite didn't require medical treatment. During her stay in our Care Center Geenie has shown high dog reactivity fixating on them with a tense body and hard barking while lunging towards them. She is not easily redirected with treats at times. During her previous stay in our Care Center she has redirected onto a handler during kennel reactivity. Staff reported Geenie is social and solicits pets. She also enjoys playing with stuff toys. During her stay in foster it is reported she is shy and anxious at first. Over time Geenie warms up and enjoys belly rubs, head massages and her bone chew/ toys. Medically, Geenie is apparently healthy.

Once she trusts you, her love is endless. She loves her belly rubs, head massages and playing tug of war. She enjoys her bone chew/toy and can happily chew on them for hours. She's very well behaved at home and is fully potty-trained. Although, Geenie can still be very cautious with strangers and a little nervous on walks, we truly believe she'll overcome her fears with patience and love. She is truly the most loyal, gentle, and lovable girl. If you're looking for a cuddle and loyal best friend, Geenie is the girl for you❤️

Summary:: Geenie was returned to the Care Center following a bite incident in a foster home. Geenie's foster reported that their roommate was sitting on a 'beanbag' style chair that Geenie had been using as her bed. Geenie appeared to be guarding the beanbag and began growling at the roommate who was sitting on it. When the foster's roommate attempted to get up, Geenie lunged and bit the roommate on the face (left cheek). Medical attention was not sought after. No further details are available on the bite. During Geenie's previous stay at the Queens Care Center, Geenie was noted to be highly kennel reactive. Geenie was also reported to have bitten a staff member, reported as a redirection bite but no further details are available. During her current stay, Geenie is noted to be social with staff and treat receptive.  However, due to Geenie's repeated history of escalating to biting, Geenie is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: Geenie was surrendered as a stray, so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/23/25 Geenie is introduced to a novel female while off leash at the Care Center. She approaches the gate with a square frame, high-flagged tail, and hackles along her back. Geenie walks away and solicits attention from handler. She approaches the gate to solicit attention from the handler in the opposite yard but when novel female reapproaches, she walks away again. 11/24: When off-leash at the Care Center, Geenie is introduced to a novel male dog. Geenie is tense with her tail tightly tucked and whale eyes, handlers and the other dog, actively increasing the distance between herself and them. She does not approach the gate to greet the male and seeks an exit. The gate is not opened, and Geenie is returned to her kennel to avoid further stress.

Summary (3):: 3/17/26: (AM walk) Geenie is at the front of her kennel, she is jumping exuberantly, but settles to stay on all 4's with a treat lure. Geenie is easily leashed, exits kennel, is kept on a very short leash due to noted reactivity. Leash is relaxed in hallway, she pulls hard, 'running' out to exit. On sidewalk Geenie's pulling is less consistent. Geenie is forward bodied, panting, strain-faced. Geenie is walked around the block. She ignores people she sees. Geenie fixates on one dog about 12-15 feet away but loses interest as the dog is walking away from her. Geenie is social, allows petting but is panting for while walk and in pulling intermittently. Geenie is treat receptive and understands sit. Geenie is walked back to MACC, re-enters kennel on short leash but without issue.

Summary (4):: 3/12/26: Geenie is at the front of her kennel with a soft body. The handler feeds her a treat, which she eats; Geenie barks at the dog on the right a once she is leashed. The handler presents Geenie some treats which she shows interest in; however, Geenie doesn’t eat them when the handler tosses them while exiting. Instead, she attempts to pull towards the kennel, but the handler continues to walk her. Geenie is brought to the yard. There, she relieves herself and runs around the yard exuberantly (zoomies). Geenie also play bows when the handler attempts to pet her head. She stops and sits when the handler gives her the command. However, when she sees another dog outside the pen, Geenie “follows” them. The handler calls her name and she breaks her focus, but immediately goes back to looking at the dog. Geenie continues to do so until the other dog is out of sight. She goes back to running around the yard. After a few minutes, the handler clips their leash and returns Geenie to her kennel. 3/10/26: Geenie is exuberantly standing on hindlegs, panting. Geenie is leashed with a treat lure. Geenie pulls hard out of kennel, is kept on a short leash as she pulls toward neighboring kennel. Geenie is walked out to yard. She is panting notably, strain faced. She is kept on leash, she walks around, sniffs, relieves herself. Geenie pulls toward dogs passing by opposite side of fence. She barks, becomes tense, and tracks dogs as they walk the length of the fence line. She is interested in treats but rarely takes any. Geenie remains strain-faced and panting throughout the interaction. After some time, Geenie is walked back to kennel safely. 3/8/26: Geenie is jumping up on the kennel door when the handler approaches. They are easily leashed. Once exiting kennel Geenie begins lunging at the neighboring dog. She is not receptive to the treat trail. While in the hallway Geenie also lunges and vocalizes towards a dog in a pop up crate. While in the driveway she relieves herself quickly and paces back and forth sniffing around. When the handler goes to clip their leash Geenie headwhips towards the handler. The handler is able to clip their leash and she is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 3/7/26: Geenie greets handler at front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and pulled from kennel. One the way outside she tries to pull to the pop crates in the hallway. Outside in the backyard Geenie socially jumps on handler and stops when handler asks for a sit. As other dogs enter the backyard Geenie stares for a little until handler calls name. Handlers starts to teach the touch command. Geenie is returned to kennel with no issue. 3/5/26: Geenie is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, but begins barking in the direction of the dog next to her in kennel. The handler feeds her a treat and leashes her. While exiting the room, the handler drops treats on the ground in front of Geenie, and she eats the treats. Once she exits the room, Geenie turns around towards the room as well as stops in the doorways of other room while walking to the yard. In the yard, Geenie sprints around on leash. She also relieves herself. When she sees another dog, Geenie watches them with a slightly tense body, but when the handler call her name, Geenie redirects her attention to them and eats treats given. Geenie is able to redirected consistently. Then, the handler brings her into the office. There she approaches other familiar handlers with a soft body. She also sniffs around and solicits pets from the handler, jumping on their lap as they're seated. After a few minutes, the handler clips their leash and returns Geenie to her kennel with ease. 3/4/26: Geenie is at the front of her kennel loose and wiggly, jumping up on kennel door. She is not interested in treats and initially difficult to leash due to exuberance. Once leashed she attempts to pull towards the neighboring barking dog but handler has her on a short leash and walks her to the hall. She is walked in the driveway where she explores and is aloof at first. after a few minutes to she sits for treats and gently jumps onto handler seeking treats. She is then brought into the behavior room where she is exuberant, jumping onto the couch and on chairs sniffing. She returns to kennel without issue. 3/3/26: Geenie is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, jumping up. She is easily leashed and brought to the yard. She passes another dog in the front yard, looks over, and keeps walking. She sniffs and bounds around in the yard, occasionally jumping up softly on the handler. She frequently offers a sit, and takes treats. The handler begins a pattern game with her, which she engages in with focus. A new dog enters the yard and passes by and Geenie tenses and stares, but her focus is called back to the handler with a cue and the game is resumed. Geenie allows petting. Genie is returned to kennel with ease.

Summary (6):: 3/3/26: Geenie is at the front of her kennel with a loose body. She jumps up on the kennel door and barks repeatedly as she is being leash. Once Geenie is leash, the handler brings her out the kennel. However, as a dog is walking by in the hallway, the handler holds Geenie inside the room; there, she attempts to pull toward the nearest kennel, but the handler shortens the leash and pulls her away. The handler then bring Geenie to the yard. There, she relieves herself and runs around on leash. She also jumps on the handler several times for treats and pets. As other dogs are being walk, Geenie starts pacing back and forth, trying to look at them. She begins to whine and pulls towards them, but the handler calls her name, and once she turns around to the handler, the handler feeds her treats. After a few minutes, the handler brings Geenie inside the building. Geenie is vocalizing and trying to pull towards the other rooms, but the handler brings her into the room and returns her to kennel. 3/2/26: Geenie is lying down on her bed in the back of the kennel. When handler approaches she comes forward with a neutral body and a slight soft wagging tail. Geenie is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. She walks with a loose leash towards the backyard. She sniffs around back and forth, she approaches the handlers and sniffs their legs and feet. They step away when she approaches. Dogs enter the yard and neighboring pens and she looks to them with a tense body. Geenie then engages with one of the handlers, jumping up on them soft with a soft wagging tail. After sometime outside, Geenie is walked back to kennel without issue. 01/29/26: On the behavior section of the room board, Geenie is reported to have redirected on handler. No further details were given. 1/24/26: Geenie is barking at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She comes forward to the front and begins to jump and paw at the door as the handler unlocks it. Once leashed, she pulls hard with a tense body with her hackles raised towards the dogs in kennels on the way to the behavior room. In the room, she is able to be transferred to a drag lead and has a tense body as she explores around with panting. She begins to have a loose body when she would approach the handler and jump up to receive pets and treats. She engages in playing fetch with a few toys and eats treats that were in a snuffle mat. She pulls hard while vocalizing towards the dogs in kennels on the way back to her kennel before entering her kennel with ease. 1/6/26: Geenie attempts to kennel fight with another dog in a crate as they walk past another reactive dog. 1/4/26: Geenie is hard barking at a handler as they pass her crate. Staff report that they try to cover her crate but she pulls the covers in.

Summary (7):: 12/23/25: (Enrichment Walk): Geenie is right at front of crate ready for handler to leash and go for her walk. As handler crouches down and gets lead ready for leashing, Geenie is wiggly body and allows handler to leash with little attempt to flee. Geenie is then leashed and is fixated on the other dogs in crates around her. she is mildly pulling to get outside and sees dogs on her way. she sees the other dogs on their walk and pulls towards them. Handler tries to redirect her and continues walking, she will still watch them until they are out of sight. Strangers are around and in passing she tenses up but ignores, Flinches if movement is sudden. Returning to building, Geenie pulls the whole way and when in meet and greet she tries to kennel fight but eventually just goes straight into her crate and handler releases lead, closes/ locks crate with no issue. 11/26/25 (Assessment): Geenie is at the back of her kennel as the handler approaches, laying down with her weight shifted towards her hind end. She will come forward to the front of the kennel when coaxed and is leashed with ease. She walks out of her kennel and into the behavior office slowly and allows the handler to clip a drag leash to her collar. (See Assessment for more information) After the session she is returned to her kennel with no issue. 11/25/25 (Assessment Note): Geenie is lying down in her kennel and looks up at the handler with a wary expression, but allows leashing while side eyeing the handler. She is escorted to the assessment room, where a drag leash is slowly placed on her. Geenie roams the room freely, pacing back and forth. She approaches handlers briefly but does not engage, maintaining a tucked tail and an overall fearful, avoidant frame. Due to these behaviors, Geenie is returned to her kennel and will be revisited for assessment at a later time when she is more comfortable due to FAS. See Behavior Assessment for additional details. 11/24: Geenie was lying down in her crate when a handler approached. She retreats to the back of the crate as it is unlatched and does not take treats - sausage, jerky. The handler attempts to coax her softly while moving slowly with the leash. Once leashed, Geenie bolts out of the kennel. She is taken to the play yard for a gate greet with another dog. Geenie is hyper-vigilant and easily startled. Once collared, the greet begins. Once done, she is returned to her crate without issue.

Date of initial:: 3/3/2026

Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined, not easily distracted by food or toys

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Geenie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Geenie's fearfulness, we recommend she is placed in a home with No children (under 13). Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity and kennel reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive/Anxiety: During her previous stay Geenie was noted in the care center to display a tense body, tail tucked between legs, pacing, and whale eyes. They were also obsvered to hard bark at handelrs. These behaviors indicate high stress and discomfort, requiring slow, predictable interactions, low-pressure handling, and confidence-building exercises to help her feel secure. Please see the handout on Fearful Defensive Behavior and Generalized Anxiety. Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: During his previous stay in care Geenie was observed to be kennel reactive and redirected on to a handler. During her current stay in the care center Geenie has been observed to lunge and vocalize towards other dogs. Geenie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
