Animal Profile

Spaghetti

Hello, my name is Spaghetti. My animal id is #247945. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/19/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Spaghetti is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: When Spaghetti arrived at the Care Center, he came out of his carrier and allowed all handling by our staff. After moving into one of the cat adoption rooms, he seemed to close himself off--tolerating cheek and head scratches from humans but otherwise not showing the same interest he did on his first day. We see many cats like Spaghetti, who become quiet and unsure as they try to acclimate to a strange new environment. We love this tabby boy, who seems to have been well cared for in his previous life. And we want the best for him, which would mean a special adopter who takes a go-slow approach to making Spaghetti feel safe, secure, and cherished. Want to lend a helping hand to a good cat who could use it right now? Spaghetti is waiting to meet you on 110th Street today.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Spaghetti was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. He was brought to Manhattan ACC with another cat. Upon intake, Spaghetti allowed all handling.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 3/24/26 Spaghetti was in the den, appearing fearful with large pupils, hissing and growling almost continuously, but then allowed a little petting on the cheek and head with a scratcher tool before lunging at the plexiglass door. 2/25/26 FB73 Spaghetti is sitting upright inside of his den, hissing and backing away when the den cover is lifted and he is spoken to. He tolerates petting with the scratcher tool on the head, cheeks, and down his shoulders but tenses as he is pet, lip licking and turning to face the back wall to avoid contact. When petting is stopped and the handler moves the tool away slowly, he hisses once more. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 2/27/26 Vol. Spaghetti was sitting hunched inside den, facing away from opening. When offered treats on scratcher tool, he moved further away from den opening and tucked his tail tightly around his paws. He did not show interest in a feather toy, and did not respond to further attempts to interact, remaining quiet and out of sight. 2/28/26 FB73 Spice is laying in his den, turning to face away from the handler as the den cover is lifted and tensing. Treats are offered and he does not respond to them. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, Spice begins hissing, tolerating petting on the head and cheeks but leaning away to avoid contact. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS and treats are left in the kennel with him. 3/6/26 Vol. Spaghetti was resting in loaf position in litter box. His eyes and ears were neutral, and he appeared subdued. He did not show interest in treats, not moving from his spot. He watched a feather toy but did not seem very interested and did not play. When pet with the scratcher tool, he extended his neck to get chin scratches and turned his head to get scratches in different spots. He pressed his body up into scratches on his shoulders, then slowly retreated into den. 3/8/26 Vol. Resting in den, just inside the portal, looking out with dilated eyes. Did not investigate a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up on the tool or when dropped into den and retreated out of sight. When den cover was raised, crouched back and hissed loudly, then lip-licked. Afterwards, peered out the portal with dilated eyes, watching nervously. 3/10/26 Vol. Hiding in his privacy den. Growled a bit when I put some catnip toys in the den. Growled some more when I tried to put the clicker in the den with some Squeeze-up. Tried to engage him with the cat dancer and the laser, but he showed no interest. Never came out of his den. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: See relevant behavior flyers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior exhibited in the care center, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Spaghetti is sitting upright at the front of his kennel, hissing, swatting, and lunging as the assessor approaches. When reaching for the kennel door, he continues to hiss, swatting hard towards the assessor. The door is closed again and treats are offered but he does not respond to them, remaining seated at the front of his kennel looking out the glass door with his ears back. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, Spaghetti hard swats at the tool, continuing to hiss and low growl before lunging once more towards the assessor. Interaction is ended to reduce stress. Spaghetti is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He will lunge and swat hard when interaction is attempted. He is extremely fearful and defensive in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
