Pre-Screener Form

Mack Moose is at risk due to behavior concerns. Mack Moose displayed defensive behavior both in and out of the shelter. During his initial intake, he was observed hard barking and lunging but was able to warm up to staff with the use of treats. In his adopter’s home, Mack Moose showed a low threshold for arousal, nipping one adopter, leaving bruising, and growling and snapping when the adopter attempted to guide him into a crate following a separation-related episode. While in the Care Centers, Mack Moose was also observed attempting to escape from his crate. Medically, Mack Moose is being treated for CIRDC.

Summary:: Mack Moose was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/17: Due to the weather, only a gate greet was conducted. Mack Moose was introduced to a novel female dog. Mack Moose approaches the gate to greet the female, body tense. As they sniff each other, Mack's body falls into a crouch before he begins hard barking and growling at the other dog. He follows along the gate briefly, still vocalizing at the other dog. He doesn't readily settle as he and the other dog are seperate from the gate as he attempts to return.

Summary (7):: 1/6: Mack Moose growls and muzzle punches the side of his crate when another dog passes his crate as they are lead into the behavior office. Another handler leaves to find a bigger kennel cover as he has pulled the other one into his crate and shredded it. When covering him, Mack Moose tries to pull the cover in as the handler is fixing it, nearly catching their fingers. 1/5: Mack Moose can push his head out of his crate at the corner of the door. A handler assists as he tries to pull his head back in but is unsuccessful. The handler opens the door fully, and Mack Moose goes to the back of his crate. Before the handler leaves for the night, they see Mack Moose has done it a second time while he was reacting to other dogs. 12/13/25: Mack Moose is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks to the Canine Behavior Office where he is loose bodied and social with multiple handlers. Mack Moose is collared clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. Mack Moose spends several minutes engaging with a snuffle mat and licky mat. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: In the prior home Mack Moose is noted with food, treats, toys and random/stolen items has a tense body/hovers over the item.Teach cues such as “drop it” and “leave it” using positive reinforcement. Ensure all interactions around resources are calm and predictable. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Low threshold for arousal/Bite history (human): When Mack Moose first came to the home he is noted to nip at the owner spouse's leg jeans when becoming excited. The 2nd time was when the spouse came home Mack Moose jumped on them nip them on the arm the didn't break skin but left a bruise. The 3rd time was the adopter's spouse attempted to lead him back into a crate using a frozen kong, Mack Moose growled and snapped but did not make contact. Destructive behavior: Mack Moose is noted to have destructive tendencies toward his crate, couch, carpet, and knocked over the T.V and ect. Use gradual crate acclimation and ensure the crate is associated with positive experiences. Consider supervised confinement or gated areas instead of forced crating during early stages. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: In the prior home Mack Moose is noted to mouthy and takes treats rough.Incorporate impulse-control games like “take it” and “leave it.” Redirect mouthing to appropriate chew toys and avoid rough play that encourages biting. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Separation anxiety/Anxiety: Mack Moose is noted to have Separation anxiety and genralized Anxiety. Use calming aids such as food-stuffed toys during departures. Avoid punishment for anxiety-related behaviors. Consider environmental enrichment and, if necessary, consult a veterinarian for adjunctive anxiety management. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety/Anxiety. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mack Moose is noted to become fearful when restrained and moved off furniture. He is also noted to growl at the owner's spouse. During intake, he is noted hard barking, growling and lunging at counselors. When counselors approached Mack Moose with treats, he allowed interaction as well as pets. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Mack Moose has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging toward them, barking, and growling. He is noted to pull towards steranger while on walks Mack Moose may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach her to focus on the handler rather than other dogs. We recommend a front-clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Leash-biting: Mack Moose is quick to grab the leash in his mouth which was also reported in the prior home. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash
