Animal Profile

Duck Duck Goose

Hello, my name is Duck Duck Goose. My animal id is #223948. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 4/5/2025.

Duck Duck Goose is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Duck Duck Goose has been highly social with handlers and staff, engages with toys and enrichment games, but was noted to become aroused and leash bite intensely during her initial assessment. In the kennel, Duck Duck Goose becomes highly reactive to other dogs, escalating to darting to either side of her kennel while hard barking, growling, snarling, screeching during cleaning, walks, or when other dogs pass her kennel. When returning smaller dogs to the kennels above hers, Duck Duck Goose snaps at the smaller dogs, catching their bedding and pulling it into her kennel. Her kennel is covered to reduce visual stressors, but Duck Duck Goose pulls the covers into her kennel and shreds them. Medically, Duck Duck Goose is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

Summary:: Due to Duck Duck Goose entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/15/25: When off leash at the Care Center Duck Duck Goose is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Duck Duck Goose approaches with a high curved tail and a stiff frame. Both dogs will scent each other at the gate. The greeter female will display a loose frame throughout. Duck Duck Goose will display hackles, a flagging tail. The greeter female will demand bark at Duck Duck Goose, who responds at first with lip licking before practicing avoidance, shaking off and running away from the gate. Duck Duck Goose doesn't return to the gate. This will conclude the interaction. 04/12/25 When off leash at the Care Center Duck Duck Goose is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Duck Duck Goose approaches with a soft frame. The novel female dog approaches cautiously and both dogs scent one another. During scenting Duck Duck Goose will display hackles and a high curved tail. The novel female walks off in avoidance. The novel female will begin to seek exit as Duck Duck Goose looses interest, walking away as well. Both dogs are separated thus concluding the interaction. 04/07/25 DDG is introduced at the gate to a Male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. DDG will approach the gate with a soft, wiggly body as the greeter dog offers her bounces. DDG is then taken into the greeter dog's pen in order to greet him face-to-face. DDG will enter the pen and immediately explore, keeping her distance from the greeter dog. As they slowly approach each other, DDG hides her genitals as the greeter dog attempts to scent her. DDG bolts off and the greeter dog remains planted. DDG will return to offer play bows and bounces and the greeter dog will do the same. At this point, they engage in chase play making minimal body contact. The greeter dog vocalizes as DDG runs around both pens and he try to catch up. DDG will shake-ff when creating distance from the greeter dog, only to return to solicit play with paw slaps. They will engage in chase play once more before being separated. DDG is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 05/18/25: Duck Duck Goose is jumping up onto her kennel door repeatedly as handler walks by. They note that her kennel door is coated with saliva and feces. 05/17/25 (Trainer Note): Duck Duck Goose is standing on the door of her kennel as the handler approaches. The glass is smeared with saliva and she is panting heavily. Goose allows the handler to place a leash and pulls hard to the canine training room, bunny hopping at points. She lunges towards dogs in crates and cries, but is prevented from accessing them by the handler. Duck Duck Goose allows the handler to attach a drag leash and participates readily in the various enrichment items. Handler then moves her over to the mat and she is able to sit and then lay down. Handler reinforces her for duration and for deep breathing. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 5/17/25: Duck Duck Goose is observed to try and jump up and grab bedding that is placed on top of her kennel during cleaning. 5/15/25: Duck Duck Goose began climbing up on kennel door as handler approached. The glass on kennel door appeared wet as if saliva-coated. She would briefly stand on all fours but resumed jumping when kennel door was opened. She was leashed and pulled towards other kennels on her way out to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Duck Duck Goose was returned to kennel without issue and offered a soft toy which she immediately engaged with. There was a note left on the rounds board (unknown author) stating Duck Duck Goose had not been leash biting lately. 05/13/25 (trainer note): Duck Duck Goose is standing on her hind legs in her kennel as handler approaches. She is hypersalivating and her saliva is smeared on the kennel door. She is easily leashed, and while exiting her kennel, she orients her body towards the other dogs in the neighboring kennels. She is kept on a short leash and exits the room and walks to the behavior office. She is placed on a drag leash and is loose and wiggly in the room. She solicits attention from the handler and engages with enrichment items. She would auto sit between items and orient towards the handler. She had difficulty with breathwork, if she was not immediately reinforced for sitting, she would jump on the handler for treats. She was ignored when jumping and reinforced for calm behavior. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel. 05/07/25 (Trainer Note): Duck Duck Goose comes to the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and walks with a soft body out of the kennel room to the canine training room. Duck Duck Goose allows the handler to attach a drag leash and moves around the room with a neutral body. She participates readily in the LATTE enrichment game, orienting towards the handler between items. Duck Duck Goose is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 4/30: Duck Duck Goose continues her reactivity towards other dogs in her kennel. She screeches while darting to either side of her kennel during cleaning, people passing through the room, dogs are being walked through, or returned to their crates. She is covered with kennel covers but she pulls them into her kennel and shreds them. 4/28: Duck Duck Goose repeatedly throughout the door, darts left to right, hard barking, growling, and snarling at the other dogs beside her. When handlers are taking out other dogs, her intensity increases, especially with the two nearest crates to her. - MC 4/24/25: When staff removes the neighbor dog from above her kennel, she will attempt to snap at the dog and begin to pull their bedding into her kennel. 04/22/25 Duck Duck Goose is in her kennel, darting back and forth, while vocalizing. As the handler approaches, unlocks the kennel, Duck displays a loose, wiggly frame. She is leashed with ease and taken out for a walk. Duck will maintain her loose, wiggly body as she trots alongside the handler moderately. Duck Duck Goose will explore along her walk, scenting different areas as their walk commences. Duck is eventually returned to the facility where she enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 04/15/25: Duck Duck Goose is loose and wiggly at the front of crate when handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and walks to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Duck Duck Goose is social with handlers throughout her time in the room. She jumps up on handlers often and will mouth their hands. After assessment, Duck Duck Goose is leashed with ease and returns to crate safely. 4/7/25: Duck Duck was barking in crate as handler approached. She had a loose, wiggly body and appeared eager to exit crate. Duck Duck was leashed with ease and walked the short distance to the BA room for her assessment. Duck Duck was highly social with handlers and treat motivated. She was returned to crate with ease by tossing in a treat. 4/6: ACS staff requested assistance from Canine Behaivor as they were unable to get Duck Duck Goose back into her crate. She would begin thrashing, flailing, and gator rolling even when offered treats and coaxing. Two behavior staff walked Duck Duck into the behavior office for a few moments before using a belly band under her back legs and muscled her back into her crate. Duck Duck began barking and pushing on the crate door while the lead was removed and the crate was latched.

Summary:: Hyperactive, panting, jumping up. Allowed all handling with food

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Duck Duck Goose's low threshold for arousal and intense leash biting, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Duck Duck Gooses behavior during playgroup, we recommend that she avoid all dog parks due to the discomfort she displays.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Duck Duck Goose persistently jumped up on handlers throughout her assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful | Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Duck Duck, Goose became fearful when attempting to return her to her crate. She escalated to thrashing, flailing, pancaking, and gator rolling and did not respond to treats or coaxing to return her to the crate. Please see handout on the Decompression Period and Handling/touch sensitivity. Leash Biting | Low Threshold for Arousal: Duck Duck Goose began leash biting and could not settle during her assessment even with attempts to redirect her by handlers. We recommend walking her with a toy to dissuade her from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement and force-free training are advised to teach him to focus on you rather than on grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Arousal. barrier frustration: When staff removes the neighbor dog from above her kennel, she will attempt to snap at the dog and begin to pull their bedding into her kennel.
